‘This May Be the Moment Where You Can Buy Low’ — NFL Analyst Urges Vikings To Pursue Trade for $88M QB Amid Kyler Murray’s Struggles

The Minnesota Vikings suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, falling 19-15 to the Detroit Lions in a divisional matchup. This narrow defeat appeared to have exposed some of the issues that have plagued the team for weeks.

Minnesota’s offense has struggled to find its footing with Kyler Murray at quarterback, and Sunday’s performance was more of the same. With those issues becoming harder to ignore, one veteran analyst believes the Vikings should consider reuniting with a familiar face to get their season back on track.

Analyst Wants Vikings To Move On From Kyler Murray

Despite the obvious talent on the roster, the Vikings currently rank No. 29 in the league with a PFN Offense Impact Score of 68.5. The struggles have also led to frustration within the locker room, with Justin Jefferson refusing to speak to the media after Sunday’s loss.

Murray has played a major part in the team’s offensive struggles, recording 1,022 passing yards (170.3 per game), five touchdowns and three interceptions while taking 15 sacks.

Given those numbers, Mike Florio of NBC Sports believes Minnesota needs to consider a change at quarterback. Rather than make a major move, the voice of “Pro Football Talk” believes the Vikings could significantly improve their offense by bringing in Daniel Jones, who is already familiar with Kevin O’Connell’s system.

“If the Vikings truly believe that they have the potential to develop into a Super Bowl contender this year, and they feel much different today than they did yesterday… as the trade deadline approaches, not a running back, they need to be thinking about a quarterback,” Florio said.

For many people, the potential fire sale in Indianapolis seemed like the perfect opportunity for the Vikings to bring Jonathan Taylor aboard. While adding a premium running back wouldn’t solve all of Murray’s problems, Taylor’s presence could take some pressure off the quarterback and open things up in the passing game.

Florio, however, has a different idea.

Pointing to the Vikings’ history with Jones and the clear familiarity with O’Connell, he explained why Minnesota should consider bringing the quarterback back.

“They need to be talking to them about Daniel Jones because that’s the guy they wanted to keep when Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones left. That’s the guy who possibly was going to be playing in place of Darnold if the Vikings had beaten the Rams and Darnold had not had an impressive performance, which is a tough needle to thread in any playoff game,” the analyst argued.

The Colts’ disastrous start to the season, which has already cost general manager Chris Ballard his job, could also work in Minnesota’s favor.

“But they loved Daniel Jones. They thought they’d keep Daniel Jones. They were dismayed when he left for the Colts. And this may be the moment where you can buy low on Daniel Jones. The Daniel Jones stock is tanking right now,” Florio continued.

Jones would, however, come with a hefty contract after signing a two-year, $88 million deal with Indianapolis this offseason, and Minnesota’s tight salary cap situation could complicate a trade.

Still, as Florio suggested, if the Vikings are serious about making a deep playoff run, they may have to take a gamble and roll the dice on a move like this.

Even if a change at quarterback isn’t on the cards, Minnesota is likely to make other moves on offense before the trade deadline. At this point, some sort of adjustment seems almost inevitable.
