Team USA Women's hockey stormed into Denmark with Olympic gold still fresh in memory and a roster stacked to run it back at the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship. The plan was to ride a wave of home support, but a tiny patch on their makeshift jerseys alienated millions before the first faceoff.
Alaska and Hawaii are home to more than two million Americans, according to the US Census, but Team USA's replacement jersey didn't include them.
The collar map decal and singular jersey distinction detail show only the lower 48 states, leaving out the rest of the country. The missing complete USA map logo was a visible result of an ongoing feud between ice hockey equipment brands Bauer and CCM.
The Women's World Championship looked more like a gear standoff than a hockey tournament. USA and Canadian players hit the ice in stripped-down jerseys as their federations clashed with the International Ice Hockey Federation over who actually controls the uniforms.
The iconic USA Hockey crest that once united the men's and women's teams at the Olympics disappeared. Now the American women hit the ice in blue sweaters stamped with plain white USA letters, stripped of any real identity.
The collar only showed the lower 48, and Canada's look was just as uninspired. Their jerseys came in basic red, with a white CANADA stamped across the chest and a barely-there collar outline after featuring a maple leaf on its Olympic gear.
The mess started when the IIHF inked an exclusive deal with TRUE Hockey. USA Hockey rolls with CCM, Hockey Canada sticks with Bauer, and suddenly the biggest rivalry in women's hockey was fighting over logos and labels instead of goals.
A Swiss court handed the IIHF the win, forcing both teams into jerseys that look more like practice gear than anything worthy of the sport's fiercest showdown.
USA Hockey has publicly distanced itself from the design and attempted to push fans toward its official merch.
"While our Women's National Team will be wearing the jersey required by the IIHF for the Women's World Championship, it is not the official USA Hockey National Team jersey, which we are not allowed to wear," its statement said.
Generic jersey or not, the Americans wasted no time showing who runs Group A, blanking Switzerland 7-0 as Hannah Bilka and Laila Edwards each scored twice.
Canada started Group B with a 5-1 win over Sweden, and both teams picked up three points in their first games. The United States faces Germany on Sunday, Austria on Monday, and Czechia on Wednesday.
