Orlando Magic Push Golden State Warriors to Overtime Before Falling Short

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Orlando Magic did just about everything right Saturday in the Bay Area.

They kept their turnovers in check with just 14 of them. They forced the Golden State Warriors into 19 turnovers, which led to 26 Orlando points. They also pulled down 24 offensive rebounds, which led to 33 second chance points. And while it wasn’t their best shooting night, they did hit several clutch ones in crunch time, including a game-tying putback by Jamal Cain with two seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

But the difference was that the Warriors have one of the greatest players of all time, and he did what he’s done time and time again throughout his magnificent career.

Steph Curry, now in his 18th NBA season, quite simply couldn’t be stopped down the stretch of the fourth quarter and in overtime, as he scored 12 points in the last 2 ½ minutes of regulation and connected on a go-ahead three-point play and a floater late in the extra session to lift the Warriors to a 126-119 victory at Chase Center.

The two-time league MVP and 12-time All-Star finished with 41 points on 13-of-19 floor shooting and 5-of-10 3-point shooting. It was the fifth time in his career that he scored 40-plus points against the Magic.

“Steph Curry,” Cain said when asked what gave Golden State the edge late. “They have one of the best players in the world on their team and he capitalized in crunch time. But I’m happy with the way we competed the whole game and we gave ourselves a chance to win. But they got (number) 30 on the other side.”

Remarkable was that Orlando got up 113 shots compared to 80 by Golden State. Normally that shot volume difference would be enough. But the Warriors shot 54 percent from the field overall and 47 percent from beyond the arc, while also making 10 more free throws. The Magic, on the other hand, shot 38 percent overall and 33 percent from 3-point distance.

Franz Wagner had a spectacular game with 30 points, six rebounds and 11 assists, while Wendell Carter Jr. and Tristan da Silva each scored 19 and Cain had one of his best games of his career with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“I thought he did a great job giving great energy,” Magic head coach Sean Sweeney said of Cain. “Obviously the points reflect him scoring, but I thought he did a great job of really attacking the offensive boards and the defensive boards for that matter. It’s big for us when he’s out there being aggressive trying to get that done and giving great effort on both ends."

Anthony Black, who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists, exited the game in the extra session with a cramp.

The Magic were once again playing shorthanded. In addition to Paolo Banchero (ankle), Jalen Suggs (knee), Noah Penda (hamstring) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) being out, Desmond Bane was unable to go because of an illness.

Star rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had 23 points for Golden State, which has now won seven straight after starting the season 0-3, and Brandin Podziemski chipped in with 15 points.

The Magic will look to snap their four-game losing streak on Tuesday when they visit the Sacramento Kings at 10 p.m. ET.
