Le Bris knows Sunderland’s new Sessegnon is warming the bench

Sunderland are rock-bottom of the Premier League after seven matches, but after picking up a point against Leeds United at the Stadium of Light at the weekend, they have avoided a five-match losing run.

There's no question that Regis Le Bris and his side have been below the expected standards this year, but there have been positive signs amidst all the frustration, and the emphatic Carabao Cup win over Brentford on Wednesday evening proved that Sunderland have the potential to climb the ladder as they did last year.

However, the manager needs to start making better use of his options.

Sunderland team news vs Coventry

Sunderland welcomed Brian Brobbey back to the starting line-up against Leeds last time out. It was a frustrating day for the Dutch forward, but his return was embraced by all of Wearside nonetheless, with Sunderland now having gone three successive Premier League matches without a goal.

Wilson Isidor, moreover, might be ready to feature. The striker has missed five straight games with a knock, but it's unlikely that he will play from the get-go - especially with Brobbey fit once again.

Omar Alderete was taken off at half-time against Brentford, but given that the experienced Paraguayan defender has only started once in the Premier League this season, Le Bris shouldn't be overly concerned.

However, there's no question that changes need to be made. It's gone a bit stale for the Black Cats this season, and this is a game that requires three points.

Why Le Bris needs to make changes vs Coventry

Sunderland have been too rigid in their Premier League line-ups this season. Against Brentford in midweek, Le Bris rung the changes, fielding 11 new players after the stalemate against Leeds days earlier.

The season is still young, but Sunderland need to bring the new parts together. After returning to the Premier League, Sunderland excelled, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League, but their success last season was built on toegetherness and industriousness.

What was lacking was a kind of maverick creativity - historically, the likes of Stephane Sessegnon might have provided the kind of sparkle that has been lacking since Sunderland returned to the Premier League.

Sessegnon was abundantly talented, but he blew hot and cold. Now, the Wearside outfit need their new version of the retired Beninese playmaker to step up.

Sessegnon might not have had the largest impact of any player to have plied their trade at Sunderland, but he left his mark all the same.

Consistency was the enemy of this exciting attacking midfielder, and now, Le Bris finds a similar case in the shape of Chemsdine Talbi.

Talbi’s Black Cats career looked dead and buried this summer, omitted from the club’s European squad. However, he is making the most of the few opportunities coming his way this term, and impressive form in the Carabao Cup suggests he could have a part to play in the Premier League.

Coventry are no pushovers - as their recent form suggests - but they are vulnerable at the back. A quick and skilful winger, he scored the winner against Hull and chipped in against the Bees. His hunger for direct contributions is exactly why Sunderland paid £20.5m to sign him from Club Brugge in 2025.

Like Sessegnon, Talbi doesn't hit perfect pitch every week, but he is a maverick, and such players are in short supply at the Stadium of Light this season.

He has shown twice against Premier League opposition this season that he has the attributes to down any defence, and if Le Bris is serious about climbing out of the relegation zone, he might just want to unleash this mercurial attacker on Saturday afternoon.
