Max Verstappen ran out as the winner in an utterly chaotic Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday, holding off a late charge from Lewis Hamilton in a race which also saw Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli crowned the 2026 F1 world champion.

There was drama right from the off in Mexico City, with Charles Leclerc handed a five-second time penalty after a battle for the lead with Hamilton on lap one saw them both go off the track. As a result of his punishment, Leclerc eventually conceded first place to Verstappen when it came time to head to the pits, but crucially, he stayed ahead of Hamilton at that stage.

As it turned out, it wouldn’t matter too much, with a lap 44 crash for Valtteri Bottas at 200mph bringing out a safety car and later a red flag that bunched everyone back up again, seeing the action get back underway with a standing start on lap 47. At that restart, Hamilton got the better of his team-mate heading into turn one, though Verstappen maintained the lead over the seven-time world champion. Verstappen was also noted for being out of position at the restart, but nothing came of it, leading to Hamilton trying to chase him down in the closing stages.

There was yet more drama to come, though, with Arvid Lindblad and Oscar Piastri colliding on lap 59 and bringing out another safety car. This once again bunched everybody up for one last restart at the end of lap 62. This time it was a rolling start, and the small advantage Verstappen held proved crucial, with Hamilton unable to make his move on the four-time world champion into turn one.

Hamilton chased down the Dutchman and was in his mirrors constantly over the final eight laps, often under one second behind, but in the end, he could not do enough to pass Verstappen and steal the victory.

Of course, rounding out the podium in Mexico City was F1’s new champion, with Antonelli earning third spot after overtaking Leclerc on lap 48. This was more than enough to see the Mercedes star wrap up his maiden world championship at the age of just 20 years and 68 days. That makes him the youngest world champion the sport has ever seen, and he is also the first Italian to win the drivers’ title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

At the opposite end of the grid and in less positive news, it was another utterly miserable afternoon for Aston Martin, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll both forced to retire their cars by lap seven due to abnormal pressure levels in their power unit systems. More power unit gremlins for Honda.

Elsewhere, Bottas, Ollie Bearman and Lindblad were the other drivers to go down as a DNF in Mexico City, while we should give a mention to Japanese driver Ryo Hirakawa, who finished P13 on his F1 debut after stepping in as a late replacement for Esteban Ocon on Saturday.

With all of that said, let’s take a look at the full race results below!
