Manchester United have endured a start to the season that has already placed them on the wrong side of several unwanted records.
Michael Carrick’s side are experiencing their worst opening to a Premier League campaign, with results leaving them down in the bottom half of the table.
Their struggles have extended beyond domestic football, where consecutive defeats have exposed problems at both ends of the pitch.
A damaging 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth also marked United’s heaviest Premier League defeat at Old Trafford since December 2024.
That result extended their winless run in all competitions to eight matches, increasing the pressure on Carrick ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.
United have also found consistency difficult in Europe, with their Champions League campaign leaving them in the bottom half of the league-phase standings.
Their next opponents, AS Roma, arrive at Old Trafford with an attacking record that has never been seen before in the club’s Serie A history.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have scored 28 goals in their opening ten league matches, surpassing their previous best of 26, achieved in the 1960/61 and 2016/17 campaigns.
Roma’s latest contribution to that record came in a thrilling 5-2 victory over Udinese.
Bryan Cristante, Rodrigo Mora, Donyell Malen, Evan Ndicka and Daniele Ghilardi all found the net, continuing the momentum from their 4-2 win against Cagliari.
They also played out a 3-3 draw with Napoli, defeated Genoa 2-0 and shared the points with Como and Fenerbahce in recent weeks.
The Italian side are currently third in Serie A with 24 points from ten matches, having won seven and drawn three without suffering a league defeat.
They sit four points behind leaders Lazio and have conceded only ten goals.
Their European campaign has also produced some entertaining encounters.
Roma drew 1-1 away to Fenerbahce, lost 4-3 to Real Madrid and then responded with a convincing 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
They currently sit 15th in the Champions League league phase.
Carrick’s side will need a significant improvement if they are to stop Gasperini’s team from extending their remarkable run.
