3 costly BCCI decisions that are ruining Yashasvi Jaiswal's career
Yashasvi Jaiswal scores a ton

Yashasvi Jaiswal is one of the most talented young batters in Indian cricket, but his journey in international cricket has raised some serious questions. Despite proving his ability with the bat, Yashasvi Jaiswal has struggled to get regular opportunities in India's white-ball teams.

The biggest concern is that Yashasvi Jaiswal has the ability to become an all-format superstar, but inconsistent opportunities and unclear selection plans could affect his progress.

With India preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, here are three major decisions that could be hurting the left-hander’s career. Amid this, S Badrinath fires back at English media over Harry Brook, calls Abhishek Sharma No.1.

3 costly BCCI decisions that are ruining Yashasvi Jaiswal's career

1 - Turning him into a one-format specialist despite his all-format potential

Yashasvi Jaiswal has become an important player in India's Test team, but he has not received regular opportunities in ODIs and T20Is. The biggest mistake has been treating the youngster as a Test specialist despite his ability to perform in all three formats.

The youngster has the batting skills and attacking mindset to succeed in ODIs and T20Is as well. However, limited white-ball opportunities have restricted his growth. The BCCI and selectors risk wasting Yashasvi’s potential as an all-format player by not giving him regular chances.

The left-handed batter has always delivered whenever he gets the chance in white-ball cricket, especially ODIs. So, making him only a Test player could affect Jaiswal’s confidence and development as a white-ball batter. Without regular chances, it will be difficult for the Mumbaikar to prove his ability and establish his place in the Indian team across the formats.

Another big concern is about Yashasvi Jaiswal's limited chances in white-ball cricket. His attacking batting, quick scoring ability, and strong technique make him a good option for both limited-overs formats. But he has not been getting regular chances despite his stunning performances whenever he got the chance in white-ball cricket.

However, there is already strong competition at the top order in T20Is, with Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi already doing really well. And then Rohit Sharma’s presence makes it tough for the selectors and team management to draft Yashasvi into the ODI side.

His recent ODI selection history clearly shows this problem. After scoring an unbeaten 110 against Afghanistan in June 2026, he was dropped for the England ODI series. He returned to the squad for the West Indies series in September but was again left out of India's ODI squad for the New Zealand tour.

Jaiswal has repeatedly been forced to wait for his next opportunity, and this will not help the young batter to settle into the format. A young player needs consistent match time to understand the game, improve his skills, and build confidence at the international level.

3 - Failing to communicate a clear long-term role in India's plans

Another big problem is the lack of clarity about Yashasvi Jaiswal's future role in the Indian team. It is still unclear whether the selectors see him as a long-term opener across all formats or mainly as a Test specialist. In ODIs, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have been preferred as openers.

Other players are also competing for the limited spots. Although batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said in September 2026 that Jaiswal remains part of India's plans, his repeated absence from ODI squads has raised serious questions.

The selectors and team management need to give Jaiswal a clear idea about his future role and what he needs to do to secure his place. Without proper communication and regular opportunities, it could become difficult for him to build confidence and fulfill his potential in international cricket.
