Gary Neville thinks second Chelsea player should've seen red for 'ludicrous' moment against Spurs

Chelsea endured a disastrous afternoon at Stamford Bridge as Tottenham secured a memorable 2-0 victory, with Xabi Alonso's side struggling to cope with their London rivals for most of the match.

The Blues were second best throughout the game, with Mike Penders' unfortunate own goal giving Spurs the lead before Mathys Tel produced a superb solo effort to seal all three points for Roberto De Zerbi's men.

However, the result was not the only talking point, with Chelsea's discipline becoming a major concern as frustration boiled over during the closing stages.

Gary Neville thinks second Chelsea player should've seen red

Gary Neville believes Chelsea should have finished their defeat to Tottenham with nine men after Morgan Rogers' late challenge on Conor Gallagher sparked a furious reaction from the Sky Sports pundit.

The incident occurred in the 91st minute, with the Blues already trailing by two goals and playing with 10 men following Cole Palmer's dismissal earlier in the second half.

Rogers caught his former Chelsea teammate Gallagher with a late challenge, prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to produce a yellow card.

However, Neville was adamant that the decision should have been much harsher, making his feelings clear during Sky Sports' live commentary.

"I think that's a red card. I really do. He's wellied him [...] it's ludicrous," the former Manchester United defender said.

The 51-year-old was clearly unimpressed by the challenge, which came during an increasingly fractious end to the contest.

Palmer had already been sent off for a second bookable offence after catching Gallagher with a late tackle, leaving Alonso's side with little chance of mounting a comeback.

Neville's comments added to the scrutiny surrounding Chelsea's conduct, with the pundit questioning why the home side had allowed their frustration to get the better of them.

Chelsea's disciplinary problems compound miserable defeat

Rogers was not the only Chelsea player to attract criticism from Neville, with Palmer's dismissal proving a significant turning point in the match.

The England international had earlier escaped a straight red card after an altercation with Mateus Fernandes, before receiving his marching orders for a challenge on Gallagher.

Neville was critical of Palmer's actions, suggesting the forward had lost control of his emotions during an already-tense encounter.

Chelsea struggled to create clear opportunities against a Tottenham side that dominated possession and looked more threatening throughout.

Penders' own goal handed Spurs the advantage before Tel's brilliant late strike ensured the visitors left Stamford Bridge with all three points.

For Alonso, the result raises serious questions about his side's performance, with their lack of discipline only making matters worse.

The Chelsea boss will now need to ensure his players respond positively, particularly with another demanding fixture against Liverpool coming up in the Carabao Cup.
