On the podium at a European Championships at the age of 15.
Lossie High pupil Sebastian Sansum won a bronze medal for Scotland at the WUKF European Karate Championships in Sheffield.
In his very first appearance at the Euros in the 14-25 years boys’ open-weight sanbon kumite category, the teenager rose to the occasion.
Eight European countries took part, and Sebastian did his hometown Elgin club Sansum Martial Arts proud.
Training five times a week under the guidance of his older brother, former Olympic athlete and karate coach Damon Sansum, Sebastian showed impressive skill, focus and composure as he progressed to the fifth round.
He scored several head kicks during the competition before securing his place on the podium.
“I am exceptionally proud of Sebastian,” said head karate instructor Damon. “Competing at your first European Championships is a huge challenge, particularly against 50 talented athletes from eight different countries.
“He showed tremendous courage, focus and determination throughout the competition.”
Sebastian was joined by fellow Sansum Martial Arts athletes Ayana Ito, 16, who studies Sports Coaching at Moray College, and Katie Young, 16, a pupil at Inverness Royal Academy.
Both represented Scotland and competed with determination against strong international opposition. Ayana successfully progressed to the third round of the 15–16 years girls’ open-weight sanbon kumite category.
“We are also extremely proud of Ayana and Katie, who represented Scotland and Sansum Martial Arts with great commitment and sporting spirit. All three athletes were fantastic ambassadors for their country and our organisation.”
Founded in 1999, Sansum Martial Arts has been teaching karate to children and adults across the northeast of Scotland for more than 27 years. With eight centres of excellence across the northeast of Scotland, the family-run organisation helps students develop confidence, discipline, resilience and sporting ability.
