Smotherman beats Power in Monday finish in Bermuda

Austin Smotherman claimed his second PGA Tour title with a Monday play-off victory over Seamus Power at the weather-hit Bermuda Championship.

The 32-year-old American parred the third extra hole to fend off the Irishman and seal his second tournament win in as many starts after a breakthrough victory in Utah earlier this month.

Smotherman and Power contested the sudden-death play-off on Monday after inclement weather forced organisers to cancel Sunday's scheduled final round.

With more bad weather forecast on Monday, officials decided to scrap the final round and proceed with a play-off between the 54-hole leaders.

Smotherman carded 65, 66 and 66 to reach 16 under through three rounds, with 2022 champion Power matching his 197 total with rounds of 66, 64 and 67.

On the first play-off hole - the par-three 16th at Port Royal Golf Course - Power missed a 20-footer for his third PGA Tour win before getting up and down from the bunker to force a third extra hole.

With the hole location having been changed, Smotherman two-putted from 15 feet for the win after Power failed to get up and down for par from the rough.

"We're out here playing an incredible sport in a beautiful spot," said Smotherman.

"Whatever things are going to be thrown at us, Zak [Williamson, caddie] and I were going to be on top of our game.

"Yesterday I felt like we handled everything pretty well and the tour has been great at communicating what's going to happen today for us.

"Once we got that news, it was nice to know what's going on. To come out on top is a cherry on top, so it's pretty awesome."

While Power missed out on the trophy, the runner-up finish effectively guarantees his PGA Tour card for 2027 after playing with conditional status this year.

Having entered the week 103rd in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, the 39-year-old is projected to climb to 53rd, with the top 100 earning PGA Tour cards for next year.

"Had a chance this morning, wasn't able to do it, which is disappointing, but overall great week, can't complain too much," said Power.

"Hit some good shots in the playoff, just didn't quite judge the wind right, but that's golf sometimes. I'll move onwards."
