'Not pressure, it's inspiring' – Najmul Hossain on Bangladesh's WTC top-four position

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain says the team's fourth-place position in the WTC standings is a source of motivation rather than stress as they prepare for the West Indies series.

Bangladesh stand fourth on the World Test Championship table as they prepare to face West Indies in a two-match series starting October 28 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The series forms part of the WTC cycle, with the second Test scheduled to begin November 5 in Sylhet. Bangladesh have won three of their six Tests in the current WTC cycle, drawn one and lost two, including their recent series in Australia, which ended 1-1.

Captain Najmul Hossain addressed the media ahead of the opening Test on Tuesday, October 27, emphasising that the team's focus remains on the immediate challenge rather than the broader championship picture. Najmul stated that he was concentrating solely on the first match and not looking ahead to the second encounter.

Najmul's approach to the series reflects a deliberate strategy of managing expectations and maintaining focus on the task at hand. The Bangladesh captain has consistently emphasised the importance of concentrating on one match at a time rather than looking too far ahead in the championship cycle.

"I am only thinking about this Test match and not even the second match of the two-match series. As a team we are always thinking about how we are going to play this match or this series," Najmul was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Najmul rejected the notion that Bangladesh's fourth-place standing creates additional pressure on the squad. Instead, he framed the situation as a source of inspiration for the team as they pursue improvement in the longest format. The captain emphasised that the team's established process has been delivering results and there is no need to deviate from it.

"For me, this isn't pressure, it is inspiring (to be in the top four) and I find it inspiring that such scenarios are emerging in Test cricket. I wouldn't call it pressure, because ever since we began our preparations or started discussing this series, our focus has been on how we have played Test cricket over the last few series and indeed over the past few years," Najmul said.

Bangladesh's Test victory in Darwin against Australia in August strengthened the team's belief in their ability to compete at the highest level. Najmul observed that the players already possessed a strong desire to improve in Test cricket before that win, and the Darwin success has only intensified their commitment to the format.

"Naturally, winning the Darwin Test has boosted the players' confidence and belief. That's only to be expected. But even before that, the players already showed a strong desire to improve in this format," Najmul said.

"They genuinely want to play this format. That desire has only grown since the win. Furthermore, I have noticed a heightened level of anticipation among the players regarding when the next Test match will take place," he added.

The Bangladesh captain also highlighted the role that public support plays in motivating the team. He noted that the enthusiasm surrounding Test cricket in the country serves as a powerful source of inspiration for the players.

"It's also truly heartening to see how much people look forward to Test cricket. They watch it and talk about it. This serves as a great source of inspiration for us. As I mentioned earlier, if we can improve by another 20-30% from where we currently stand, it will elevate the position of our national team, and, God willing, we will achieve something even better," Najmul said.

Player availability concerns

Concerns over player availability emerged on the eve of the first Test. Mushfiqur Rahim sustained a blow to his hand during practice at the BCB Academy premises on Tuesday, October 27, and received ice treatment before leaving the nets. The exact extent of the injury remained unclear at that stage. Bangladesh were also managing the fitness of Litton Kumar Das, who is recovering from a right hip-joint injury sustained during a century he scored in Bangladesh's second innings of a Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi earlier in October.

Najmul remained confident about both players' prospects for the opening Test. He acknowledged that the team was awaiting final medical reports but expressed optimism about their participation.

"He (Litton) is doing well so far. He worked on his fitness this morning as well. But we have not received the exact report from the physio and trainer yet." Najmul said.

"InshaAllah, we are hopeful of a positive outcome. If everything is fine, he will play. But I still have not received the report, so I cannot say anything with 100 per cent certainty," he added.
