New Zealand have been dealt a double injury setback ahead of their five-match ODI series against India, which gets underway in Auckland on November 4, 2026. Left-handed batter Mark Chapman has been ruled out of the entire series after an MRI confirmed a left hamstring injury sustained during the European T20 Premier League, with medical staff indicating he requires at least two weeks of rehabilitation before returning to full fitness.

Rachin Ravindra, who was already sidelined for the T20I leg of the tour, will also miss the ODI series. Ravindra dislocated his right shoulder during a promotional shoot, and although he has been recovering, his shoulder has not yet reached a point where he can field comfortably in white-ball cricket. New Zealand Cricket confirmed both absences on November 2, 2026, noting that the upcoming Test series against India later in November was also a factor in managing Ravindra's workload carefully.

New Zealand had lost the preceding T20I series 3-2 to India. In response to the two absences, the national selectors have made four additions across the split squads for the ODI series. Wicketkeeper Tim Seifert, who was initially named only for ODIs 4 and 5, has been included across all five matches. Henry Nicholls has been added to the squad for ODIs 1 to 3, while Dean Foxcroft has been called in for the final two games. Seam bowler Matt Fisher, originally selected for the last two ODIs, has now been included from the first match as an additional bowling option for ODIs 1 to 3 as well.

What are the injuries keeping Chapman and Ravindra out?

Chapman's hamstring problem was identified through an MRI scan following his participation in the European T20 Premier League. The scan confirmed the extent of the strain, and team management determined that the two-week minimum recovery period made it impossible for him to be available for any part of the five-match series against India.

Ravindra's situation is different in nature. The shoulder dislocation he suffered during a promotional shoot had already kept him out of the T20I matches against India. While he has been undergoing rehabilitation, the medical assessment found that his shoulder was not yet capable of sustaining the demands of fielding in white-ball cricket.

With the Test series against India scheduled for later in November 2026, New Zealand's management chose not to take any unnecessary risks with his recovery. Captain Mitchell Santner's squad assembled on Monday, November 2, with Matt Henry's readiness also being assessed separately after he missed the last three T20Is due to a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter addressed both situations.

"I caught up with Mark last week and although he’s disappointed he’s working hard to get back on the field. With Rachin, his shoulder hasn’t quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don’t want to take any undue risks," Walter was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

New Zealand head coach also acknowledged the significance of losing both players.

"Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it’s a shame they have to miss this series."
