New Zealand National Cricket Team might have started to smell a win against the 2026 T20 World Cup champions when they got their 5th wicket inside the 11th over of the India vs New Zealand 2nd T20I match in Christchurch. If New Zealand could have won today's match, the scoreline of the bilateral series would be 1-1 after playing the first two games.
Skipper Mitchell Santner played well, taking 4 wickets in four overs for an economy rate of 5.25. In the first innings, Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs performed well with their bat, scoring 70 off 43 and 58 off 46, respectively.
The hosts did everything they could to neutralize the heavyweight Indian playing combination. After securing 180 runs in 20 overs, New Zealand strengthened their grip on the match by removing Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel inside the eleventh over. India was cornered until Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir walked onto the pitch.
Later, some fireworks from Nitish confirmed the second successive win for the Men in Blue in the ongoing T20I series against Mitchell Santner's side.
After going down 2-0 with three more matches to be played, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said that the knocks played by Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Naman Dhir controlled the momentum of the match. Because of their counter-attack, the bowlers of the home team also made a few mistakes at the end of the match.
"I mean, you play a very good team. It’s always going to be like that, I think. Tilak and Naman and then obviously Reddy at the end really played pretty well. I think if we got one more wicket there, it was kind of game over."
"So the way they controlled that chase and, I guess, made us make some errors at the end," Mitchell Santner explained one of their defeats against India in a closely contested match (as quoted by Cricbuzz).
Further in his explanation, the Blackcaps skipper expressed that few moments in the match showed their brilliance, like their batting. The team was not unhappy with the 180-run total in the first innings.
"There’s plenty going through my mind. I think obviously the way the guys started with the ball was outstanding, I think. A score like 180, if they get off to a flyer with the power play, it’s pretty tough from there. So I thought we did pretty well to claw them back, and then obviously through the middle, Beast (Bracewell) is bowling extremely well, and it was nice to get a few poles," Mitchell Santner continued.
"I think, you know, a couple of no-balls, obviously no-ball wicket and stuff like that along the way, that obviously hurts you. And I think that from a skills point of view, it’s been very good the last two games. It’s just kind of those little moments where, whether it’s in the field or kind of those little sloppy stuff, that’s going to hurt us a little bit," he added.
