Thunder to retire Westbrook's No. 0 as Jokić closes in on his triple-double record

Oklahoma City will retire Russell Westbrook's No. 0 on February 7, 2027, against the defending champion New York Knicks. The ceremony lands as Nikola Jokić chases Westbrook's NBA triple-double record and as the Thunder deal with a long injury list.

Oklahoma City will hang Russell Westbrook’s No. 0 in the rafters this season. The night carries a second storyline. Westbrook’s NBA record for career triple-doubles is under real pressure from Denver’s Nikola Jokić.

General manager Sam Presti made the announcement at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum’s Day One Luncheon. Westbrook also received the Oklahoma Standard Award there. He retired in August after 18 NBA seasons. He becomes the second Thunder player with a retired number, after Nick Collison’s No. 4. That jersey went up on March 20, 2019, before a home game against the Toronto Raptors.

Thunder chairman Clay Bennett said the team is “incredibly proud” to retire the number. He pointed to Westbrook’s lasting work in the community.

Westbrook defined the franchise’s first decade in Oklahoma City

The results explain the honor. Oklahoma City’s .607 winning percentage in his years ranked third-best in the NBA in that span. The Thunder made nine playoff trips and four Western Conference Finals. They also reached the 2012 NBA Finals.

Westbrook won the 2016-17 MVP. He earned eight of his nine All-Star appearances and eight of his nine All-NBA selections in Oklahoma City. He remains the franchise leader in games, points, rebounds, assists and steals.

His departure shaped the present, too. Oklahoma City traded him to the Houston Rockets before the 2019-20 season. That move started the roster build behind the team’s current success. The retired numbers will travel with the Thunder to Continental Coliseum, which is scheduled to open for the 2028-29 season.

Jokić is piling up triple-doubles at a faster rate

Jokić’s milestone came with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in Denver’s 104-91 win over New Orleans. He reached 200 in his 814th game. Westbrook needed 1,175 games to get there.

The gap in efficiency is wide. Jokić has posted a triple-double in 24.5% of his games, compared with 16.1% for Westbrook, according to NBA.com. That pace puts the record in play during the same season Oklahoma City honors the man who holds it.

For the Thunder, the celebration offers relief on a difficult calendar. Presti said Williams needs surgery for a dislocated left ankle and fractured fibula. Wallace needs surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder. The team has given no timeline for either player.

Before the Cleveland game, the Thunder’s most recent result was a 119-98 loss at Houston.

Further details on the ceremony will follow from the team.
