Arch Manning threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma as the Texas Longhorns fell to a surprise loss, and he fumbled after a sack against Florida on Texas’ final drive, which might be enough to call for his head, but analyst Joel Klatt isn’t putting all the blame on the Texas QB just yet.
Klatt believes the problem runs deeper than Arch Manning at Texas and insisted that “everybody is involved” when things start to fall apart.
“I think Texas’ biggest weakness right now is not Arch Manning; it’s their offensive line. The offensive line played terrible (against Florida). That does not excuse any other position group. I’m not telling you that Arch played great because he didn’t,” Klatt said on his show.
“The scheme, I thought, was subpar against Florida… I think Steve Sarkisian has a hand in this. I think the offensive line has a hand in this, I think that Arch has a hand in this…you don’t have this type of collapse on offense like Texas is having unless everybody is involved.”
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum pulled no punches on Steve Sarkisian after the Texas head coach appeared to support Arch Manning amid mounting criticism.
“What a disaster. The absolute arrogance of [Steve] Sarkisian to crack back at people like me and others with the idiotic take of the year that if his [Manning’s] name was Joe Smith, you would be praising him,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show.
“I’m beginning to wonder if Arch Manning should even start. I know he will, and he’s capable of leading them to a win, but I blame Sarkisian for every aspect of this.”
It remains to be seen whether Texas can turn things around as the Longhorns face Ole Miss on Saturday.
