Conor McGregor declares his ‘final fight’ will blow Canelo Alvarez away at box office

Ryan Harkness breaks down daily mixed martial arts (MMA) news, providing unique context to stories that only 15 years of obsessing over the sport can provide, having worked for FOX Sports, Yahoo! Sports, UPROXX, MSN, Bleacher Report, HDNet and CagePotato, among others, before joining MMAmania.com in 2017.

Conor McGregor says his next fight will be his last and promises the event will be bigger than anything Canelo Alvarez has ever done.

The Irish sports star is currently rehabbing an injured knee that he blew out a minute into his highly anticipated return to the UFC back in July. There’s no expected return date sorted for “The Notorious,” but when it happens it will be the biggest McGregor fight in history, according to the Mac.

”How many views did the Canelo fight get?” McGregor asked in a tweet. “How many in attendance? Gate? Man I outdo ALL of these people in sales. Majorly. EVERY SINGLE ONE. With ease. Maybe even combined. I don’t even be trying.”

“I was on the same time as the World Cup semi final and still done all them numbers in that last bullshit that I’ve to sit with for another few months before I return,” he continued. “I’m going to actually try to sell the fight for my next one. My final fight. See what numbers I can generate. Keep outdoing my own records.”

The sales pitch is already on as McGregor claims this will be his final fight. After fans spent over $25 million dollars to attend his non-fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329, he’ll need an angle like that to convince people to pay up for his next spinning jump kick at the can.

After five years away from the sport, it’s clear that 38-year-old McGregor’s body cannot handle mixed martial arts. But is Conor really planning to stop competing? He has one fight left on his UFC contract, and while he was reportedly paid around the realm of $30 million for his last 69-second fight, that’s still just a fraction of what he would make on the open market.

This ‘last fight’ talk sounds like just that: talk. Not just to convince fans to pay big money to see his last dance, but to convince the UFC it’s an event worth paying for as well.
