Celtic collapse as Celta Vigo roar back to pile Europa League misery on Martin O'Neill - 5 talking points

The Hoops took the lead through Mika Baur but a deadly double from Javi Rodriguez leaves them pointless and facing an uphill task to qualify

Celtic 1 (Baur, 41) Celta Vigo 2 (Rodriguez, 68 & 71)

A second half collapse over three-and-a-half minutes leaves Celtic sitting pointless in the Europa League table after suffering defeat to Celta Vigo.

Martin O'Neill's men are now zero after three games and are on a run of four successive European defeats and five in their last seven matches in all competitions.

Qualification for the knockouts is now an uphill task with fans wondering where a win might come from following a Javi Rodriguez double that rendered Mika Baur's opener meaningless.

An even enough first half was low on actual chances.

Callum Osmand was seeking either a red card and a free-kick or a penalty and a yellow when he went down while racing towards the box, but Bulgarian ref Georgi Kabakov told him to get up.

The hosts made the perfect start to the second half as Haissem Hassan went past Marcos Alonso down the right and delivered.

Celtic's Mika Baur celebrates after scoring to make it 1-0

A deflection on the cross fell kindly for Mika Buar and the German sent a nice, controlled finish to put Celtic ahead in a Europa League game for the first time this season.

Benjamin Nygren almost powered home a second at the near post after a great first touch but was denied by Radu.

Liam Scales then saw a looping header come off the top of the bar as the hosts looked for a bit of daylight.

iInstead, the Spaniards levelled things up. Javi Rodriguez benefitted from a brilliant free-delivery from Alvarez and bulleted a header home from close range.

If you thought his header was powerful, the strike for his second goal was unstoppable.

Donovan's slip allowed Swedberg to hit the byline and cut the ball back. Jutgla's clever dummy allowed Rodriguez to step on to the ball and he thumped it past Johnstone from the edge of the box.

Here's five talking points from the east end of Glasgow:

One or the other

Callum Osmand was adamant he should have either had a free-kick and a red card for Celta or a penalty and a yellow in the first half.

Celtic's Callum Osmand pleads with Referee Georgi Kabakov

Javi Rueda put a hand on the Englishman's back as he raced towards the box. It definitely started outside the area but Osmand continued over the line as he went down. He was told to get up and while the pundits were left incredulous, it was probably the right call from the ref.

Play again, Sam

Keeper Sam Johnstone was a surprise starter as he was brought out of cold storage. The last time he was thrown into a big game, it was for the 3-0 defeat at Ibrox last month and he did not cover himself in glory. Martin O'Neill opted to give him another shot against Celta and he let no-one down, although wasn't overly tested, thanks to a combination of more good Celtic defending and wasteful Vigo finishing. Got a hand to Rodriguez' header but it had too much power from such a short distance for him to keep out. Absolutely no chance wit the second.

Hassan showing signs

As one Egyptian was scoring and setting one up against Hearts, another was showing what he could do at Celtic Park. Haissem Hassan hasn't really caught fire since his big money move from Real Oviedo in the summer, but signs of what he's capable of have been there. Tonight was arguably the clearest yet of what Celtic have bought. He clearly fancied it against Alonso and his final ball was much more consistent than it has been, although faded badly after the hour mark. More of the same will be demanded, and for longer

Slick Celta

Neil Lennon played against Celta as the Hoops reached the UEFA Cup Final 23 years ago and recalled them being a tough nut to crack while assuming the current crop would be the same. They weren't half.

Celta Vigo's Spanish defender Javier Rodriguez celebrates scoring

Celtic had their spells but when the Galicians stepped it up, Celtic found it hard to live with. They were fluid in possession with multiple rotations you expect from Spanish teams and could have scored more than they did. Probably Celtic's best Europa League display this season, but Celta were just a level above.

Up against it

Since the new league phase format was introduced, no team has even reached the playoff round after losing their first three games. That's the situation Celtic find themselves in now - crucially, with two home games having come and gone. They've still four games to play, but with two of those against Besiktas and Marseille, another home defeat was the last thing they needed. The French club are just above them in the table with new boys Torreense not too much higher and already those games look massive.
