What Washington coach Jedd Fisch said after comeback win over Nebraska

Washington (5-3, 2-3) coach Jedd Fisch met with the media following his team's 17-10 victory over Nebraska. The Huskers (5-3, 2-3) blew another fourth-quarter lead on Saturday night and suffered their third straight loss of the season.

The Huskers held a 7-3 lead entering the fourth quarter, but for the third straight game, they couldn't hold on. Nebraska’s offense struggled mightily, managing only 387 yards.

Quarterback Anthony Colandrea was 24-of-44 for 255 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. One of those interceptions was returned for a touchdown. Jamal Rule has 72 rushing yards but only 13 attempts.

The defense surrendered only 267 total yards and 32 rushing yards but couldn't make the key plays late to hang on to the lead. Nebraska is now 17-3 all-time on Halloween. Fisch had a lot to say about his team's comeback victory.

“Fantastic win for the Huskies, I thought Nebraska played incredibly well. What a game day environment they have here. It was loud, it was hard to move the ball, their defense is good, and they did a fantastic job. Our defense is salty, and our defense is good, and our defense did a fantastic job. I thought as a team, it took everybody. It took everybody on our roster. It took a 50-yard field goal. It took an incredible job punting, It took the punter making a tackle. It took three interceptions by our defense. It took multiple pass rushers. It took Elijah (Durr). It took Demond (Williams). It took all the backs, all the wideouts, all the tight ends, and it took the offensive line battling all the way till the end. So all together, all three phases got this win. What a cool place to get a win, two road games in a row in the Big Ten. This is a Big Ten win, 17-10. I challenged the team all week, I said ‘you have to hold them under 13 points.’ That's how you win on the road in the Big Ten. That's what the stats tell you. That's what it looks like. I know we talked about there's a race to 21. If you get to 21, you win 93% of the time in this conference, so that was a huge deal by our defense. This is what I think we should start expecting on these road games against really good teams.”

“No, I certainly wasn't expecting to make any change. First of all, he (Elijah Brown) came off six really good quarters and a really good bye week, and Demond (Williams) was working his way back from injury, and Elijah earned the right to be the starter. And I'm not sure that he didn't earn the right to continue the fourth quarter, but I felt we needed a spark. I felt that the way they were playing us, what they were doing coverage-wise, we needed the ability that Demond has, and that's the ability to be able to make a play with his feet if it presented with all the man coverage we were getting, and be able to make maybe a little bit more of that play that wasn't drawn up per se. We got the spark we wanted, we got the spark we needed. Demond Williams has been the starting quarterback here for a lot of weeks, and he is a really good player. But I think maybe the last game and a half as he's recovering gave him another opportunity of insight. And boy, I'm so proud of how he played.”

“I saw the Minnesota-Indiana game, and both guys kicked 60-yard field goals. I saw our game, we kicked a 50-yard field goal with Tyler (Robles). We punted the ball 10 times maybe, and just flipped the field every single time. In this conference, you've got to be able to play field position football. You've got to be able to not get greedy as a play caller, which is really hard. It's fourth and one on the 40. I wanted to go for that bad, but I told myself ‘wrong conference.’ That was a few years ago. You have to punt it and Hunter Green keeps pinning them back, pinning them back, pinning them back. That last one, it was unfortunate that they got it on the 25th because we had a chance there to put them back as well.”

Nebraska will hit the road this Friday for a weeknight showdown at Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Fox.
