Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel has urged Manchester United fans to "get on the bandwagon a little bit" but also to be "very tentative" after Michael Carrick's side overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Roma in the Champions League.
A "negative atmosphere" was set before kick-off at Old Trafford when green tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch, green and gold balloons were released as the teams came out, and songs were chanted in protest of the club's ownership.
"I would still be very tentative if I was them, particularly as Manchester United's next two games are against Aston Villa and Liverpool," Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily. "That is a tough ask, even if you are on a good run.
"But if you are going to force a change, you have to get on the bandwagon a little bit to promote the positivity, so I liked the fact the fans stayed and didn't go home frustrated at half-time.
"I completely get they want to protest, but that just doesn't help the players. If they want their players to do well, which I very much believe they do, it is about backing the team as they did in the second half.
"When it is going wrong, I would urge the fans not to get negative straightaway. It is important to put things into context sometimes, such as understanding that Aston Villa are a very good side.
"Things can go wrong in games but it is all about the reaction. It is the players' responsibility to give the fans something to cheer about. If they do that, the supporters will respond as they did against Roma."
