Chelsea targeting Trent Alexander-Arnold as surprise transfer opportunity emerges

Chelsea could be preparing for a significant change at right-back as the club assess their options ahead of the upcoming transfer windows.

With uncertainty surrounding Malo Gusto’s future at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have reportedly identified an unexpected target who could bring considerable experience and creativity to their defence.

Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has emerged as a potential option, with former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown suggesting the England international could be tempted by a move to west London if Chelsea decide to make an approach.

Chelsea Monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are keeping tabs on Alexander-Arnold as questions continue over his role at Real Madrid. The 28-year-old has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Jose Mourinho, with competition for places limiting his opportunities.

Brown revealed that Chelsea are among the clubs monitoring the situation, telling Football Insider: “One name who I have heard in connection with a move to Chelsea is Trent Alexander-Arnold.”

He admitted the potential transfer had initially surprised him, adding: “It came as a bit of a surprise to me, to be honest, but he has fallen well down the pecking order at Real Madrid to the point where he’s now the second or even third choice.”

The former scout also questioned whether the defender currently fits into Mourinho’s plans, explaining:

“It appears Mourinho doesn’t rate him particularly in that right-back position, and he’s not the only one, because he’s been out in the cold for England as well.”

Despite those concerns, Brown believes Alexander-Arnold remains an attractive player because of his technical ability and reputation. Chelsea, meanwhile, have reportedly been assessing potential replacements for Gusto as they consider changes to their defensive options.

Brown added: “Alexander-Arnold is a talented footballer who has a very good skillset, but it is those weaknesses in his game that often raises concerns.”

He also suggested that Chelsea’s interest in high-profile players could make the move possible: “Chelsea, though, will always be keen on the possibility of signing a big-name player; it’s just what they do, so they’ll be keeping an eye on whether he does become available.”

The possibility of a return to Liverpool has also been discussed, but Brown believes Stamford Bridge could become a realistic destination if the defender decides to leave Spain.

“They’ll want to avoid that situation coming up again, as will he I expect, so Chelsea could be where he ends up and he could be tempted if they decide to make a move.”

However, Alexander-Arnold is not currently pushing for an exit. Previous reporting has suggested he wants to fight for his place at Real Madrid, meaning any potential Chelsea move would depend on how his situation develops.
