In its first game as the No. 1 team in the country in 24 years, Miami is having little trouble with Pitt, holding a 17-0 lead late in the first half on their Week 8 matchup on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Still, the Hurricanes encountered an unexpected and unwelcome obstacle.
Star wide receiver Malachi Toney, one of the leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy, asked to be taken out of the game and jogged gingerly off the field after a five-yard catch in the second quarter.
It interrupted a stellar day for the sophomore, who had already hauled in nine catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
Where do things stand for Toney?
Here's the latest on his injury:
On a 1st-and-19 following a personal foul penalty that wiped out a 36-yard run from Mark Fletcher, Toney caught a short pass from Darian Mensah for a five-yard pickup.
As he was trying to evade Pitt defenders, though, Toney appeared to tweak something. After being taken down to the turf at Hard Rock Stadium, he came up and motioned to the sideline to be taken out of the game before jogging gingerly off the field.
Once on the sideline, Toney went into the injury tent. After coming out, he remained with a helmet on and was limping while doing exercises on the sideline, according to the ESPN broadcast.
He wasn't out long. After Pitt scored a touchdown to trim its deficit to 10, 17-7, Toney was back in the game for the Hurricanes to start their next drive. He made his presence felt, too, hauling in a 21-yard reception on third-and-18 from the Miami 31-yard line before later breaking off a 53-yard touchdown reception to pad his team's lead back to 17.
After the touchdown grab, Toney had 11 catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. It's the fifth time in seven games this season that he's amassed at least 110 receiving yards in a game and he's three yards shy of his third game with at least 150 receiving yards.
Heading into Saturday's game against Pitt, the Miami-area native had 50 catches for 758 yards and eight touchdowns. He's fourth among all FBS players in receiving yards per game and is tied for fifth in touchdown receptions.
