DAZN Team May Call Canelo-Mbilli From London

Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli could fight in Riyadh on October 31, with DAZN’s broadcast team following the action from a studio in London. The potential arrangement adds another question to a card already approaching under difficult circumstances.

Dan Rafael reports that the team is likely to call the event remotely if it goes ahead. His report leaves both points conditional: the card proceeding and the commentators working outside Saudi Arabia.

“Per sources, if #CaneloMbilli goes forward Oct. 31 in Riyadh, the likelihood is that the DAZN broadcast team will not be ringside and will call the card remotely from a studio in London,” Rafael wrote on X.

DAZN’s likely move speaks for itself. Calling one of the year’s biggest fights from television monitors thousands of miles away suggests the broadcast team wants no part of the danger in Riyadh. Promotional talk about the event going ahead cannot erase the attacks on the city’s international airport.

It also creates an awkward contrast. Commentators would work from the safety of a London studio, while Canelo, Mbilli and the undercard fighters would be expected to fly to Riyadh, attend media events and fight. If the risk is enough to keep the broadcast team away, the fighters have every reason to question why they should be there.

The background explains everything. Dan Rafael reported earlier on missile strikes and drone activity aimed at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, even while noting Canelo planned to go ahead anyway. Those strikes turned travel safety and the host city into the dominant story leading up to the bout.

A London crew can watch the live monitors, but calling an event off a monitor is never the same. Commentators lose their direct line of sight between broadcast angles. They miss corner chaos, subtle crowd shifts, and whatever happens outside the camera frame, leaving them watching the exact same feed fans see on their couches.

That is a massive drop in quality for a pay-per-view centered on the sport’s biggest earner. Calling action from ringside lets commentators catch real impacts, subtle cornerman instructions, and shifts in body language that cameras and boom mics miss entirely.

Canelo is penciled in to challenge Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title. The sanctioning body still lists October 31 in Riyadh on DAZN.

The card needs an official word on how the broadcast will work. Rafael’s reporting suggests fight week will look bizarre, even if both guys walk to the ring on schedule.
