'Don't see him playing' - Aakash Chopra's huge prediction on Varun Chakaravarthy ahead of 4th T20I between NZ and IND

Aakash Chopra feels Varun Chakaravarthy will remain on the bench for India's fourth T20I against New Zealand at Eden Park, citing the team's reluctance to compromise batting depth on a grassy pitch.

India hold a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth T20I of their five-match series against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30, 2026. Axar Patel has operated as the primary spinner across the first three matches, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav have remained in reserve throughout the campaign.

Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has offered a stark assessment of Chakaravarthy's prospects for the upcoming fixture. Chopra believes the mystery spinner will not feature in the fourth T20I unless India are prepared to sacrifice a batter at number eight in the batting order.

"I don't see him playing. He's not played anything. Unless you are okay to compromise that number eight slot for the batter, Varun might still not play," Chopra said during a discussion on Cricinfo.

Chopra stated his reasoning during a recent discussion about India's team composition and the conditions expected at Eden Park. The analyst pointed to the ground's shorter straight boundaries and the grassy pitch surface as factors that would favour pace bowling over spin options.

"I want him to play these two games, but a fast bowler will have to be benched. Even if these are dead rubbers, India is not going to compromise a batter at eight for an out-and-out bowler. Will a fast bowler go out, though? Because we are at the Eden Park," Chopra said.

"There are very short straight boundaries. We will have a decent amount of grass coverage on the surface. And there is a bit of help for the faster bowlers. So three fast bowlers, then it becomes a must," he added.

Why Chakaravarthy remains on the sidelines

Chakaravarthy has struggled to find rhythm in international cricket over the past six months. His last T20I appearance came in September against New Zealand, leaving him with limited recent match exposure ahead of this series.

The spinner's international credentials remain strong despite his recent absence from the playing eleven. He has also done well in overseas conditions.

Chopra's analysis reflects the tactical dilemma facing India's selection committee. With Axar Patel established in the role and the pitch conditions favouring pace bowling, the path back into the team for Chakaravarthy appears narrow in the short term. The fourth T20I would test whether India maintains their current bowling combination or introduces changes with the series already secured.
