Eagles injury report: 7 players miss practice ahead of Giants game

The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the practice field Wednesday with several significant injury concerns ahead of Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the New York Giants.

Philadelphia listed 18 players on its initial injury report, including seven who did not participate in practice. Running back Saquon Barkley (hamstring/back), linebacker Jihaad Campbell (hamstring/quad), defensive back Michael Carter (abdomen), wide receiver Britain Covey (knee), cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring), wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) were all sidelined.

The extensive injury report comes as the Eagles attempt to snap a six-game losing streak and improve on their 2-6 record before entering their Week 10 bye.

Philadelphia is particularly thin at running back and wide receiver, creating another challenge for an offense preparing to make a quarterback change from Tanner McKee to Joe Milton.

Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith among seven sidelined

Barkley's status remains one of Philadelphia's biggest concerns after the veteran running back has continued to deal with hamstring and back injuries. His absence Wednesday raises questions about the Eagles' backfield options against the Giants.

The Eagles have already placed Dameon Pierce and Tank Bigsby on injured reserve, leaving Jaydon Blue and other available options to shoulder the workload if Barkley cannot play.

Philadelphia's receiving corps is also dealing with significant injury problems. Smith and Wicks both missed practice Wednesday, while Covey remained sidelined with a knee injury.

The potential absence of multiple receivers would create additional challenges for Milton, who is preparing to make his first start with Philadelphia after replacing McKee.

Defensively, Campbell and Jones were among the players unable to participate. Carter also missed practice with an abdominal injury, leaving Philadelphia with more questions about its defensive depth.

Eagles receive encouraging updates on defense.

Despite the lengthy list of absences, the Eagles received some encouraging news with several key defensive players participating in practice.

Outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard was limited with an ankle injury, while Jalyx Hunt was limited because of knee and ankle issues. Both players will be worth monitoring as Philadelphia prepares to face the Giants.

Linebacker Zack Baun was a full participant despite a shoulder injury, while defensive tackle Jordan Davis practiced fully with a thumb injury. Defensive tackle Moro Ojomo (neck) and defensive back Kenny Moore II (glute) also participated without restrictions.

Offensively, guard Landon Dickerson (hip) and tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) practiced fully. McKee was also listed as a full participant despite a chest injury, while kicker Jake Elliott was limited with a right ankle injury.

The Eagles will return to practice Thursday, and Friday's final injury report will provide a clearer picture of player availability for Sunday's matchup.

For a Philadelphia team desperately trying to reverse its fortunes, getting healthier at several key positions could matter as much as the quarterback change. The Eagles cannot afford many additional setbacks as they look to enter their bye week with some much-needed momentum.
