Ben Griffin looks to be back in fine form after a disappointing season.

The 30-year-old had the season of his life in 2025, winning three times on the PGA Tour to earn his place on the American Ryder Cup team. He was a top-10 player in the world and hoped to take the next step and contend for a major championship.

Unfortunately for Griffin, he went backwards in 2026. He has no wins this year and only three top-fives, struggling with his play off the tee all year long. He wasn’t picked for Brandt Snedeker’s Presidents Cup team, and he recently revealed he’s been struggling with a knee injury.

Griffin returned to action in the fall completely healthy, though, and finished T4 at the Mexico Open. Now he’s teeing off at the World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo, hoping to defend his title from last year.

And Griffin even said it’s possible that he breaks a PGA Tour record with his performance this week.

Ben Griffin eyes PGA Tour record held by Hideki Matsuyama

Griffin won the World Wide Technology Championship at a staggering 29-under par last season, but this year he thinks he can do even better. The American even admitted that breaking Hideki Matsuyama’s PGA Tour scoring record of 35-under par, set at the Sentry last year, is possible.

Speaking to the media before the event, he said, “Anything’s possible. No, I think it would be a

challenge. I haven’t looked in depth at the forecast for the week to see just how much windier it will be or whatnot. We’ll have to see how the course conditions change throughout the week.

What is your best ever score for 18 holes?

No, pitch and putt does not count!

“I think 29 under’s going to be really hard to top. I can’t believe I shot that low. Even when I was looking in the pamphlets, and I saw I shot 29 under last year, honestly I couldn’t believe it. I was like wow, that was actually me? I actually made that many birdies in 72 holes? That’s almost half the holes.

“So I think the record maybe is Hideki Matsuyama at the Sentry, I think it was 35 under is what he won. That was par 73. If it was 72, it would be 31. I guess it’s possible, but I think if I were to beat 29 under, I think I’d be up here again next year talking to you again as defending champion.

“So I’ll try to do it, hopefully I do and that would be pretty special.”

It seems that his down season has not affected Griffin’s confidence in the slightest, as he looks to make PGA Tour history this week in Mexico.
