Tanner McKee Week 7 grades: Eagles QB earns mixed review vs. Dallas

Quarterback grades rarely tell the whole story, especially when a team struggles to find answers. Tanner McKee took over for the injured Jalen Hurts on Monday night, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to three scores, but it wasn't enough to stave off a Dallas Cowboys onslaught.

Decent play gave way to uneven accuracy. A fourth-quarter interception contributed to another frustrating night. Philadelphia finished on the wrong side of a 38-21 final score, extending its losing streak to five games.

McKee finished 23-of-35 for 211 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception. He helped Philadelphia score on its opening two possessions and led a lengthy third-quarter drive that ended with a touchdown reception by Makai Lemon, his first as a pro.

Those stretches showed an offense capable of sustaining possessions, but the quarterback couldn't maintain that level of execution throughout the game. The Eagles needed more from McKee when opportunities arose, especially late in the first half and during their attempted comeback. His performance included encouraging decisions and a few costly mistakes, leaving a mixed evaluation after another loss. Here's how McKee graded out in Week 7.

Tanner McKee's best throws

McKee's best moment came in the third quarter, when he connected with Lemon for a four-yard touchdown to put Philadelphia back in front. The throw wasn't his best technically. Truth be told, it was a tad off-target, but it lands in the 'best throws' category based on other factors.

Philadelphia had finally scored during the third quarter. They finally did something with their first third-quarter possession after winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half. The TD score also doubles as the first of Makai Lemon's professional career.

The 17-play, 84-yard drive consumed 9:16, giving the Eagles their longest touchdown drive of the season. The possession showed McKee helping the offense execute across multiple situations. Philadelphia converted key downs, maintained possession, and finished in the end zone rather than settling for a field goal.

McKee deserves credit for getting the ball to Lemon in a scoring situation, even if the throw made the receiver's adjustment more difficult than necessary. The drive as a whole showed that McKee could run an offense capable of moving the ball and finishing drives.

Tanner McKee's worst throws

This sequence has been mentioned as nauseam, but a thorough look deserves more here. Philadelphia had its best starting field position of the night when it took over at its own 41-yard line with 1:36 remaining in the second quarter. The Eagles had an opportunity to add points before halftime, but McKee's inaccuracy turned the possession into one of the game's most frustrating sequences.

On first-and-10, McKee missed badly on a throw to a wide-open Darius Cooper, putting the ball too low for the receiver to catch. Cooper got open again on second down, but McKee went elsewhere, targeting Makai Lemon instead. The pass fell behind Lemon and was incomplete, leaving Philadelphia facing third-and-10.

McKee completed a five-yard pass to Lemon on third down, but it wasn't enough to move the chains. The Eagles punted after gaining just five yards in three plays over 25 seconds, wasting favorable field position and a chance to extend their lead before the break. With the defense struggling to stop the pass, the missed opportunity carried even more weight.

Tanner McKee's Week 7 final report card

Accuracy and ball location: C-

McKee completed 65.7% of his passes. That's a notable improvement over his completion percentage against the Carolina Panthers, but his overall accuracy remained inconsistent.

He finished with 211 yards on 35 attempts, averaging just 6.0 yards per attempt. That limited production reflects an offense that struggled to generate reliable gains through the air, even when it found success in short stretches.

McKee showed enough accuracy to keep drives moving, but he didn't consistently deliver the ball in stride or give his receivers opportunities to create after the catch. The completion percentage was respectable; the lack of sustained passing production was not.

Vision and dissection: C

McKee helped the Eagles move the ball on their opening possessions, and the offense showed it could function when the run game and passing attack complemented each other. Philadelphia scored on its first two drives, giving McKee an early platform to operate from rather than forcing him to chase the game immediately.

As Dallas took control, however, the Eagles couldn't consistently find answers through the air. McKee finished with 211 passing yards, and Philadelphia's offense struggled to maintain the same rhythm it established early. The quarterback showed he could work within the offense, but he didn't sustain enough progress to keep the Cowboys' defense under pressure.

Intangibles and off-script plays: C

McKee offers nothing as a scrambler, which means he must win with exceptional arm talent. 'Exceptional' wouldn't be the word most would use to describe what they saw in Week 7.

He stayed composed through a difficult game and kept operating despite the team's mounting problems. He helped the Eagles produce three touchdown drives and didn't appear overwhelmed by the responsibility of making his second start in place of Jalen Hurts.

His performance also came amid significant absences at receiver, with DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks unavailable. McKee had to work with a different target combination, and the offense still found ways to finish drives. That adaptability earns him credit, even though it didn't translate into a complete performance.

Decision-making: C-

McKee's interception was the clearest negative in this category, even if some might say the pick was less about poor ball placement or a bad decision and more about DeMarvion Overshown's great effort. With Philadelphia trailing and needing points, McKee's pass to Dallas Goedert turned into a turnover, making an already difficult comeback even harder.

This also highlighted another well-known factor: the importance of protecting the ball when the offense has little margin for error. McKee finished with one interception and no lost fumbles, so the turnover total wasn't excessive. Still, the pick's timing mattered. The Eagles needed better judgment when every possession was valuable. He avoided a disastrous turnover-filled outing, though the interception was costly enough to keep this grade low.

Leadership: B-

After the game, McKee took responsibility for his contribution to the loss. He acknowledged his mistakes and said he needed to execute better. That accountability was important after a loss in which the offense had opportunities but couldn't sustain its best stretches long enough to change the outcome.

McKee helped the Eagles tremendously. He showed patience and coordination. The Eagles ultimately fell short, but McKee's willingness to own his performance and continue competing gave the team something to build on as it navigates an unsettled quarterback situation.

Overall grade: C-

McKee's second start was mixed. He helped Philadelphia score three touchdowns and showed that the offense could move the ball in stretches, but his passing production remained modest, and as we know, this is a results-based business.

The Eagles' defensive struggles drove the deficit, so the loss shouldn't fall on McKee alone. Still, he has to improve his consistency and make better use of the opportunities the offense creates. The next step for McKee is turning those productive stretches into dependable execution, particularly when Philadelphia needs him to protect a lead or answer an opponent's score. Until he can do that, the Eagles will have little clarity about whether he can provide a viable solution at quarterback or is simply a capable backup who needs more help around him.
