Manchester City fans have made their feelings clear on social media after they fell to a defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.
Earlier in the week, City and Brighton met in the Carabao Cup, with Enzo Maresca’s men advancing to the quarter-finals after winning 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in normal time.
On Saturday afternoon, the pair met again at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League, with Yasin Ayari giving the visitors a 1-0 lead inside 11 minutes.
In the second half, Maresca brought on the likes of Rayan Cherki and Nico O’Reilly as they pushed for the equaliser. Eventually, Fabian Hurzeler's men produced a brilliant defensive display to hold on to a vital 1-0 win.
Following the match, City remained top of the Premier League table but will drop to second place if Arsenal win or draw against Liverpool in a mouth-watering clash at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Taking to social media, City fans were far from impressed with the performance of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been criticised in recent weeks.
Against Aston Villa last time out, Donnarumma failed to save Nicolas Jackson’s winning goal, with the ball seemingly going under the Italian goalkeeper.
This time around against Brighton, Donnarumma failed to keep a clean sheet and was involved in a number of nervy moments at the back of City’s defence.
One fan said: “Donnarumma has to be dropped, it’s all falling apart.”
Another tweeted: “Donnarumma genuinely the worst player in the world.”
A third fan added: “Donnarumma is atrocious.”
Someone else wrote: “Donnarumma is a double agent man you can't convince me otherwise.”
A fifth commented:
“Donnarumma…Bro just relegate us so he leaves.”
Another fan said: “Donnarumma is such a liability.”
One City fan added: “Gianluigi Donnarumma, what an unserious goalkeeper.”
Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap Daily, ex-Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard labelled Donnarumma as a world class goalkeeper. However, the former midfielder felt that the recent criticism was justified, stating he had to do better against Villa.
He said: “[Villa] scored two good goals in my opinion, two goalkeeper mistakes. Listen, he’s a world-class goalkeeper, and he’s got the reputation in the game that he deserves. I’m not denying that.
“He’s been brilliant for City since he came in. But I just want to go back to the PSG game; I thought he was at fault there.
“So, you’d expect a reaction from there going into Villa. There was two things that happened in the game; the goal that Jackson scored first that he hits into the roof of the net, I think his arms are too low or in too much of a neutral position to get there in the first place.
“But in the second half, the same thing happens with a City player. [Josko] Gvardiol, it was same type of strike. [Zion] Suzuki’s arms are higher, ready, and he tips it onto the bar and it’s a world class save. I expect Donnarumma to do the same in the first goal.
“he second goal, it just goes through him. He’s like a wet Weetabix.”
