India's former Test captain Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, at the age of 36, bringing down the curtain on a 14-year career in the longest format. Across 123 matches, he accumulated 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, with a career-best of 254 not out.
Among his 30 Test hundreds, seven were double centuries, each of them scored against top-ranked opposition on Indian soil.
At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Kohli walked in at No. 4 and constructed one of the most dominant innings of his Test career against England in the 4th Test of their 2016 tour of India. Facing 340 balls on December 8, 2016, he struck 25 fours and 1 six on his way to 235, helping India post a first-innings total of 631. The result was a victory by an innings and 36 runs, and that win gave India a 3-0 lead in the five-match series with two games still remaining. Kohli became the first Indian to score three double centuries in a single calendar year in 2016, and this innings was central to that achievement.
Coming into the 3rd Test of Sri Lanka's 2017 tour of India at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi, Kohli had already scored centuries in the two preceding Tests of the same series. On December 2, 2017, he extended that form emphatically, facing 287 balls and scoring 243 at a strike rate of 84.66, hitting 25 fours in the process. India declared their first innings at 536/7, and the match ended in a draw. This was Kohli's 6th Test double century at the time, and it stood as his highest Test score until the Pune innings two years later.
Kohli's highest Test score arrived at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune during the 2nd Test against South Africa in October 2019. On October 10, 2019, he batted through 336 balls to finish unbeaten on 254, hitting 33 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 75.59. India declared at 601/5 in their first innings, and the match ended with a victory by an innings and 137 runs, giving India a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. This innings surpassed his previous best of 243 against Sri Lanka and was his 7th and final Test double century. The 254 not out also remains Kohli's highest score in first-class cricket and his highest as India's Test captain.
