Marc Márquez expects a renewed surge from Jorge Martín as the MotoGP championship tightens ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix. Despite Martín's right arm fracture, the Ducati rider has been medically cleared to race, a development Márquez regards with cautious respect and strategic urgency.

The Australian GP left Márquez with a bitter aftertaste after the medical helicopter’s inability to take off forced a race cancellation, denying him a crucial chance to extend his championship lead.

Currently, Márquez tops the standings by just 10 points over Martín, who is battling injury, and 50 points ahead of Marco Bezzecchi, who clings to mathematical hopes after mid-season errors squandered his commanding lead.

Márquez focused on Sepang

Márquez, speaking ahead of the Sepang weekend, underlined his focus: “I arrive at this Grand Prix fully concentrated, with all data controlled. Concentration doesn’t give you speed on track, but it helps reduce mistakes.”

He acknowledged the unpredictable weather conditions, comparing Sepang to Phillip Island in terms of requiring adaptability. “We have to be ready for anything, stay concentrated, and adapt to whatever track conditions we encounter.”

Surprise at Martín’s clearance

The standout news from Thursday’s medical check was Martín’s clearance to race despite his fractured radius, a bone critical for arm strength. Márquez expressed surprise but acknowledged the thoroughness of modern medical protocols: “The radius is the main bone, so it’s surprising. But if they’ve given him the fit, considering the medical protocols established after my own injury in Jerez, it must be safe for his physical integrity in the future.”

Reflecting on the severity of Martín’s injury, Márquez admitted, “It’s hard to understand how someone with a fractured radius can ride a MotoGP bike. But Martín has proven to be a fierce competitor. If he’s been cleared, I trust—and fear—that he will be fast.”

This pushes Márquez to intensify his own efforts: “It won’t change how I work but will make me strive to maximize my performance.”

Australia setback and Ducati mindset

Regarding the lost opportunity in Australia, Márquez remained pragmatic: “It was a missed chance to open a significant points gap, but racing and winning aren’t guaranteed. The cancellation was for safety—riding in the rain can be dangerous, and the helicopter’s inability to fly meant it wasn’t safe. You have to accept that and focus on the future, not dwell on the past.”

On the Malaysian circuit, traditionally favorable for Ducati, Márquez signaled a shift in mindset since Indonesia. “Now, at every circuit, we have to attack. All circuits are Ducati and Marc Márquez’s circuits. That’s the mentality. Of course, rivals will challenge us, but on Thursdays, we come out to fight for everything.”

As the championship battle heats up with Martín’s return and Márquez’s determination, Sepang promises a high-stakes showdown where resilience and strategy will be paramount. Read also: Martín cleared to race.
