'We need to take more control': Richardson on Reading FC

Reading saw their momentum halted at the weekend after following up a 5-1 victory at MK Dons with a disappointing loss at the DW Stadium.

While frustrated by the result, Richardson believes there were enough positive signs in the performance to suggest his side should have taken more from the game.

The Royals boss revealed Reading registered 42 touches inside Wigan's penalty area but were unable to turn their dominance into points.

"As you'd expect, obviously disappointed with the result," Richardson said.

"Watching the game back on the journey home and then over the weekend into today, debriefing the game, there's a lot to improve on.

"I think we had 42 touches in the opponent's box. We've had chances to win enough games, but ultimately we fell the wrong side of the result on Saturday.

"It's something that we need to adapt to, take more control in and out of possession."

Fortunately for Reading, there is little time to dwell on the disappointment, with Leyton Orient visiting the Select Car Leasing Stadium in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Richardson believes the busy League One schedule can work in his side's favour.

"When you're winning, you want games around the corner to keep that momentum," he said.

"When you haven't got the result you're chasing, you want another game to make sure you get that result.

"We've got two really good home games now and it's something we're looking forward to, obviously in front of our fans."

The clash has been selected as the featured League One fixture on Wednesday evening, adding extra attention to a Reading side that has impressed at home so far this season.

Richardson is hoping his players embrace the occasion.

"I think it always adds that extra special," he said.

"When you're growing up as a kid, you always wanted your name on your back, under the lights, at a stadium, floodlights, night games, and then obviously with the live Sky cameras there, it gives that extra little bit of oomph to go and perform, to go and win.

"Fingers crossed, in front of your own fans at home, you want to put a big performance in and that's what we'll try and do."

Wednesday's match will also see Richardson come up against Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens, a former teammate and long-time rival.

"He's had a few years now in management, very competitive, he was a very competitive player," Richardson said.

"We clashed on the pitch quite a lot, even though we were teammates, because we both wanted that desire and that will to win.

"I'm sure the technical area will be no different on Wednesday night, both wanting to win."
