The Monster Energy Supercross series has announced new rules for the 2027 season that will raise the minimum age for participation, makes chest protection mandatory, removes two riders from the Main events, and adjusts points accordingly.
The new minimum age for participation in Supercross event will be 18 for the primary classes. The age limit for SMX Next riders will be 16. Raising the minimum age in the primary classes will make it easier and more cost effective for promotors to obtain insurance. Considered amateurs, those requirements are not the same for the developmental program.
Chest Protectors, which have been optional until now, will be required in 2027.
Another major change will be the lowering of Feature riders from 22 to 20.
In 2027, 66 riders will be accepted to compete in a Supercross event, down from 80 previously. The fastest 38 riders will qualify for the heat races with 19 riders (down from 20) competing in each heat. The top eight riders (down from 9) will will automatically advance into the Feature. Four riders will continue to advance via the Last Chance Qualifier.
Adjustments will be made to the points structure since two positions have been eliminated (22nd-place did not pay a point in 2026). The top of the order has not been changed with 25 points awarded to the winner and 22 awarded to second-place. Points will decrement by two from third to fifth, with fifth-place now being awarded 16 (instead of 17 previously). Each position from sixth through 20th will decrement by one point.
In addition, the sound check limit has been lowered from 112 dB to 109 dB. The new decimal limit falls within the range of stock bikes, which will allow privateers to compete. If those teams have difficulty meeting the sound requirements, the OEMs have said they will work with privateers.
