‘I don’t care about Dallas’ – Sorensen only focused on Vancouver in fight for top spot
‘I don’t care about Dallas’ – Sorensen only focused on Vancouver in fight for top spot

Vancouver Whitecaps boss Jesper Sorensen insisted he does not care about FC Dallas in the battle for first place in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps are top of the West, but only by a point after losing 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids last time out.

In fact, Vancouver have only won one of their last six league matches (D3 L2), allowing Dallas to close the gap to just one point with three games to go.

The Whitecaps host San Diego FC next on Wednesday, which will be followed by a home clash with the Seattle Sounders and a trip to rivals CF Montreal.

Despite the mounting pressure on Dallas, Sorensen insisted his full focus is on his Vancouver side.

"I don't care about Dallas. I care about us," said Sorensen. "I care about us getting the right feeling of how we play.

"I think we have been talking and last year we did not talk much about first place. We just attacked things.

"I think now we have been talking about maybe defending first place because we have had it for a while. I don't think that's the right thing or the right way to see it.

"I don't go into where we end up. We end up where we end up. I don't care. What I care about is how we play."

San Diego are 12th in the West after a 2-2 draw with the Sounders on the weekend, marking their third consecutive draw and fifth in six matches (L6).

They will be eliminated from play-off contention if they lose at Vancouver, or if they draw and Real Salt Lake win at Austin FC.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vancouver Whitecaps – Brian White

White has scored four goals in three career matches against San Diego, including playoffs, tied with Petar Musa for the most goals scored against San Diego.

He scored multiple goals in each of his last two against them, including two goals and two assists at San Diego in May.

San Diego FC – Cedric Bakambu

Bakambu scored both of San Diego's goals in their draw with Seattle on Saturday, including a match-tying penalty in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.

The former Villarreal forward is the eighth different San Diego player to score multiple goals in an MLS match.

MATCH PREDICTION: VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN

Vancouver's defeat at Colorado was their 11th loss in their last 44 regular-season matches dating back to July 2025.

The Whitecaps have not suffered consecutive league defeats in that time, posting a record of W7 D3 L0 in the matches following the previous 10 losses.

San Diego's winless run extended to nine matches (D5 L4) with their draw against the Sounders, equalling the longest regular-season streak in club history, set earlier this year.

They have not won a match outside of California since a 1-0 win at Sporting Kansas City on March 7.

Vancouver have won two straight over San Diego, both on the road, including the 2025 Western Conference Final.

The home side has never won this matchup, though, as San Diego recorded a 5-3 win at BC Place in their only previous road match against the Whitecaps in March 2025.
