Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice says manager Mikel Arteta has created a team mentality that has allowed the club to go to places like Anfield and win.
Speaking after the Gunners secured victory for the first time away to Liverpool since 2012, Rice said that Arteta used examples where the team had broken other hoodoos:
“Coming to Anfield, I think the record here speaks for itself – the first win here in 14 years – so today to win 1-0, to show that togetherness, resilience – it’s unbelievable.”
“I’m just delighted to get the win and the three points. The manager drilled that into us, showed us the last time before we won at Spurs away, Chelsea away, it was many, many years, and Liverpool was the longest outstanding one.”
“He drilled it into us to have that mentality to come here today and win, to show that togetherness. I think the togetherness is unmatched. I’ve never been in a team like it that’s got this togetherness. The manager, what he’s built, how happy everyone is every day to come in, see each other, work and represent this club – it’s amazing.”
While the 27-year-old was keen to emphasise the team’s winning mentality, it has to be said that the Premier League champions would not have secured all three points without him.
Rice created Kai Havertz’s winner with a superb cross, and he also made what was likely a goal-saving tackle in the first half.
The win at Anfield means that Arteta’s men have leapfrogged Manchester City in the Premier League table, following their defeat at home to Brighton on Saturday.
The Gunners can head into the next international break in 1st place even if they draw this weekend, but they will be expecting to bag another win when they face Hull City.
