GdS: Milan vs. Inter to be a ‘full’ sell-out for the first time since 2019 – the reason

The derby between AC Milan and Inter on Saturday night will be a full sell-out for the first time in over half a decade.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, it is as if there has been a surge in pride just hours after the unveiling of the new stadium that will replace it in five years. San Siro opens its arms even wider for tomorrow’s derby, as it has for over 100 years.

The highest possible capacity can be sold: for the occasion, the safety curtains located in the two stands will be removed, namely, the Terzo Anello Blu (South) and Terzo Anello Verde (North). This means that San Siro will be a sellout in the truest sense of the word.

The last time it happened was for the derby on 17 March 2019, with 77,479 spectators. A total of 2,350 additional seats are available: this is the amount that was removed from the stadium’s capacity in the summer of 2019, which became effective starting with the 2019-20 football season.

The decision was made by the Provincial Supervisory Commission and implemented by the City of Milan and the MI Stadio, following observations by the technical commission, which also included the Polytechnic University, of the vibrations felt particularly in those areas (sectors 349-351-352 of the Green third and 307-309-310 of the Blue third).

This measure, however, was not related to a true safety issue, but was considered ‘managerial’ by the technicians at Palazzo Marino: the aim was to prevent fear from spreading among fans when they felt the vibrations.

It’s worth noting that the absence of restrictions will apply to both the league and the Coppa Italia: in the Europa League for AC Milan and the Champions League for Inter, the screens will be regularly placed in the centre of the away stands.

Anyone entering San Siro, however, has been accustomed for years to seeing those three blue and green rectangles located in the stands at the centre of the third tier. Now they will no longer be there: San Siro is destined to say goodbye, but for now it’s only revving up.
