Nottingham Forest handed fresh VAR verdict after Crystal Palace controversy

The Premier League's KMI panel have reviewed Nottingham Forest's recent defeat at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace should have had a goal disallowed during their 3-1 defeat of Nottingham Forest, according to the Premier League ’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel.

Missed chances proved costly for the Reds in the capital earlier this month as it proved to be a miserable return to his former stomping ground for head coach Oliver Glasner. Dan Ndoye had given the visitors the lead early on but they failed to capitalise on it and Palace turned the game around.

However, there was controversy around the Eagles’ second goal right on the stroke of half-time. It was credited to Jefferson Lerma but replays suggested he headed the ball onto the elbow of Anan Khalaili, despite a VAR check allowing it to stand.

The five-person KMI panel reviewed the incident as part of their independent assessment of key decisions in games. They voted 3:2 that the goal should have been chalked off by referee Peter Bankes, but they unanimously declared it was right that VAR did not intervene.

The panel ruled the on-field decision was incorrect due to the handball but voted 5:0 that VAR Darren England made the correct decision because it was “not a clear and obvious error”. The KMI panel reasoned: “The panel noted the difficulty in this decision due to the readily available footage.

“The referee's call to award the goal was deemed incorrect 3:2 on the basis that on the balance of probability the ball is likely to have come into contact with Khalaili's arm. The panel all supported the VAR's decision to not intervene on the basis that the footage readily available to the VAR doesn't show conclusive evidence of a handball.”

The incident came a few weeks after Forest had a goal ruled out against Tottenham Hotspur for handball. On that occasion, Neco Williams’ effort was scrubbed off following a VAR check and the match finished 0-0.

Asked whether he had any issues with Palace’s second goal, Glasner said at the time: "I haven't watched it back. I complained after our disallowed goal against Tottenham that the threshold of the VAR intervention should be very high, and maybe it was like this today. So please, not everybody has to listen to Oliver Glasner; it could also be the opposite now.

"The goal was given. We had a few very tight decisions against us, but maybe it's also a test for all of us to stay calm and keep working.”

The KMI panel independently assesses key decisions taken by match officials, including VAR, in Premier League fixtures. It is made up of five members, consisting of a Premier League representative, a representative from referees’ body Pro Ref and three independent representatives (ex-players and managers).
