During their annual Halloween game, the Carolina Hurricanes didn’t just come out with a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, but one franchise record was broken – and another NHL record was tied as they took the game with a 3-2 score.
With just over four minutes left in the first period, Jordan Martinook scored the first goal of the game – which would prove to be the only goal of the frame. Of course, there was a fan in the stands in a costume themed after Martinook’s ‘Meals with Marty‘ vlog – and yes, that fan was heavily focused on during the broadcast.
The second period was a little choppy, but still came with another goal in the Hurricanes’ favor thanks to Logan Stankoven.
As for the third period, Mark Jankowski scored just 16 seconds into the final frame.
However, penalties soon began to stack up, including this interesting tripping call against Sebastian Aho. The man behind the Hurricanes’ bench wearing the ‘blind referee’ uniform was hilariously focused on by the Hurricanes Hockey Network’s cameras following that penalty’s announcement.
While shorthanded, Seth Jarvis was on a pretty clear start to a breakaway, but Charlie Coyle dived in an attempt to stop him. That type of play typically leads to a penalty shot, but it instead led to a power play for the Hurricanes, which would result in four-on-four hockey for a time. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour mentioned after the game that he believed it should have been a penalty shot, and further stated that he did not receive an explanation for it. My best guess is that it failed to result in a penalty shot since Jarvis still managed to get a shot off after sliding across the ice on his rear.
During the four-on-four situation, Denton Mateychuk got one back for the Blue Jackets.
Frustratingly, Kent Johnson got a power play goal less than three minutes later to bring the game within one – but thankfully, that was all she wrote for any more goals from Columbus in the game. As a matter of fact, that was it for goals in the game, period. When the Blue Jackets pulled goaltender Jet Greaves, there was no empty net goal.
With the win, Pyotr Kochetkov extended his season-opening winning streak to nine games, claiming the record for longest goaltender win streak to begin a season in franchise history.
Hilariously, before the Hurricanes tossed candy into the stands for Halloween – and before even the Storm Surge and hug circle – Nicolas Deslauriers had a special show of respect for Kochetkov in the goalie hug line. Echoing back to Kochetkov’s kneel towards him after the game against the Vancouver Canucks, in which he scored twice, Deslauriers genuflected to his goalie after the win – something he mentioned he intended to do if they came out with the win during the ice-level interview before the game.
After being announced to have earned the first star of the game, Kochetkov pulled up for the bench interview, and in classic Kochetkov fashion, he didn’t take an ounce of credit for the win – verbally pointing towards his team instead. Great stuff.
Not only did Kochetkov achieve the Hurricanes’ franchise record for the hottest start to a season by a goalie, but he now has the longest win streak to start a season for any active goalie in the league, having ironically surpassed Frederik Andersen for the record.
With their 11th win this month, the Hurricanes tied for the most wins in the month of October in NHL history.
Having assisted Stankoven’s goal, Nikolaj Ehlers is now on a five-game points streak.
