Man Utd 'pick between Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann' to replace Michael Carrick

Eddie Howe has reportedly emerged as the favourite to replace Michael Carrick if he is sacked by Manchester United. The latter is dangerously close to being relieved of his duties after the heavy midweek Champions League defeat at the hands of Como. He will remain in charge for Sunday's game against Bournemouth, but another painful loss could spell the end of the road for the 45-year-old at Old Trafford.

Several big-name managers have already been linked with the potential vacancy, including the likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte.

Howe is also thought to be in the running, with the former Newcastle boss still available following his exit from St James' Park over the summer.

United's director of football Jason Wilcox is expected to have the final say when it comes to Carrick's future and has already picked his preferred replacement, according to talkSPORT.

It's claimed that Wilcox would favour the idea of appointing Howe, who was considered by the Red Devils before Ruben Amorim's arrival in 2024.

On that occasion, he was put forward by then-sporting director Dan Ashworth, but United decided to go with Amorim instead.

The report states that Wilcox values Howe's prior experience of managing in the Premier League, while head of recruitment Christopher Vivell would prefer to hand the job to Nagelsmann.

The former Germany boss has already been sounded out for preliminary talks to gauge his interest in potentially replacing Carrick.

Fabian Hurzeler is also admired by United's hierarchy, but it's claimed that he wouldn't be keen on leaving Brighton to join the Red Devils.

Antonio Conte's representatives are said to have reached out to United to express his interest in taking charge, but the Italian isn't expected to be among the leading candidates.

He was previously overlooked due to his fiery nature, while his preferred back-five system is similar to the unsuccessful approach favoured by Amorim during his time in charge.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery also fits Wilcox's criteria but would be expensive to prise away from Villa Park, even if he wanted the job.

Meanwhile, the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna are believed to be outside contenders, having been involved in previous processes.
