All Blacks legend Dan Carter believes New Zealand's number 10 jersey remains up for grabs ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The two-time World Cup winner has questioned whether any player has truly made the position their own since Richie Mo'unga's departure in 2023.
Damian McKenzie and Beauden Barrett have both worn the famous jersey, while Ruben Love has emerged as another serious contender.
With Mo'unga now back in the international picture, the battle is heating up.
"We're really lucky, we've got some great depth. I guess the challenge is, who's going to put their hand up and really take that role over the next couple of years?"
Carter believes the competition remains wide open.
"I don't think we can answer that question of who's going to be playing at the World Cup just yet because there's still a lot of Test matches and a lot of footy to be played before then."
He added: "I think it's an amazing opportunity for one of them to go, 'Right, that number 10 jersey's mine.'"
1. Damian McKenzie
The Chiefs playmaker has strengthened his case with impressive performances against Australia. His versatility also makes him an option at full-back.
2. Richie Mo'unga
New Zealand's starting fly-half at the 2023 World Cup is back in contention. His experience could prove crucial, although recent injury problems have disrupted his return.
3. Ruben Love
The Hurricanes star enjoyed an outstanding Super Rugby campaign and earned Dave Rennie's trust at international level. An ankle injury has since interrupted his progress.
4. Beauden Barrett
The veteran remains a contender despite featuring at full-back. Rennie has made it clear that Barrett is still an option at fly-half.
5. Josh Jacomb
The Chiefs youngster is an outside contender. He has impressed at provincial and Super Rugby level but faces stiff competition from more established internationals.
With less than a year until the World Cup, Rennie faces one of the biggest selection decisions of his tenure.
