Even though they’re entering Week 8 with a 5-2 record, the Denver Broncos have been flying under the radar. Sean Payton’s offense hasn’t lived up to expectations, ranking 24th in scoring through seven games. Defensively, Vance Joseph’s unit is doing their job, ranking seventh in points allowed.
Yet, the Broncos are still in just second place in the AFC West, and general manager George Paton may be eyeing an upgrade or two ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline on Nov. 10.
While Bo Nix and the Broncos’ passing offense have left much to be desired early on, ranking 24th in net yards gained per passing attempt, they also rank 25th in yards per carry. They’re not benching Nix or adding yet another star receiver to go with Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle. However, the Broncos could try to find a way to boost a rushing attack that hasn’t gotten the same production out of J.K. Dobbins as he offered last season. While second-round rookie R.J. Harvey has been coming on as of late, the Broncos could find a way to supplement his talent with a true home run-hitting star in the backfield.
Recently, ESPN ranked the top NFL trade candidates heading into the deadline, and listed at No. 1 was All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor. More interesting was the fact that ESPN listed the Broncos as a team fit for Taylor. But the Broncos weren’t the only team listed; they also named the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, New Orleans Saints, and Minnesota Vikings.
“Teams I’ve talked to aren’t totally sold that Indianapolis will trade Taylor despite heavy interest — at least not yet. He is signed long term and would be a boon for next year’s coaching staff, whether it’s the current group or entirely new. But what Kenneth Walker III has done for Kansas City shows how a premier running back can put on new jersey colors and immediately reimagine a team’s season. And the tenor of Indy’s season is getting ugly, which affects all key players and could spark even more movement.”

ESPN’s NFL analyst Matt Bowen added that “Taylor would be an immediate upgrade for a team in need of a lead back who is decisive with the ball.” Already up to 587 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this season, there’s no doubt the three-time Pro Bowler would be a significant upgrade in Denver, or anywhere else he goes.
