Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson have both been handed grid penalties for Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix following their fiery clash during FP2 on Friday.

Red Bull star Verstappen and Racing Bulls' Lawson will both drop one place for Sunday's race after the stewards ruled on the incident at Autodromo Hermano Rodriguez.

The incident in question occurred during FP2 in Mexico City, with Verstappen going down the inside of Lawson into turn 12 and the two drivers exiting the corner side by side, even making gentle contact.

Verstappen's unhappiness was made clear immediately, putting his hand in up and questioning what Lawson was doing. Neither driver yielded heading into turn 13, though, with Verstappen aiming to get ahead around the outside, and Lawson holding firm on the inside line.

Unfortunately, two did not go into one heading into turn 14, with Lawson using all of the track and forcing the four-time world champion to cut the corner slightly and go over the kerb. This resulted in him colliding with Lawson's Racing Bulls car as he returned to the track.

Lawson and Verstappen disagree after Mexico City clash

In the aftermath of the clash, both drivers gave their thoughts - and unsurprisingly they offered very different opinions.

"He just drove into me, bro," Lawson said on his radio. "He literally just drove into me. Every weekend!"

Verstappen meanwhile told media: "Well, I don't think it's called unlucky. Maybe not very smart behaviour, what he was trying to do there.

"At the end of the day it’s not going to change my weekend, but if I were him, I would be acting a little bit smarter.

"When you're fighting for your seat, it's not very smart behaviour."

Stewards announce ruling and grid penalties

The stewards later announced their ruling and the penalties, explaining: "The Stewards heard from the driver of Car 3 (Max Verstappen), the driver of Car 30 (Liam Lawson), team representatives and reviewed video evidence.

"On the approach to turn 12 car 3 was on a preparation lap and car 30 was on a cool down lap preparing for another push lap.

"The drivers of both cars behaved in a manner that was considered unacceptable by the Stewards particularly in view of the warning that had been given at the Team Managers meeting earlier this day.

"Both drivers admitted the moves were unnecessary and “clumsy”.

In addition to the grid drops both drivers were given one penalty point on their licences - that means Verstappen has one and Lawson four for the relevant 12-month period.
