Jack Nicklaus is not one for hyperbole. So the prediction he made about Bryson DeChambeau back in 2020 really did raise some eyebrows.
Nicklaus is the greatest golfer of all time, certainly if we take major wins as the main barometer.
The Golden Bear won 18 major championships throughout his career, including six wins at The Masters.
Jack Nicklaus knows Augusta National like the back of his hand, and his knowledge of the golf course played a key role in his record of six Masters titles.
Bryson may have an extra incentive to sign up for LIV 2.0…
Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau has won two majors, although he is still yet to earn himself a green jacket.
With his skillset, he will surely win The Masters one day. His length off the tee and shot shape from right to left make his game tailor-made for Augusta National.
Speaking of his prodigious speed and power, Nicklaus believed that the LIV Golf star’s length off the tee would enable him to overpower Augusta back in 2020.
Nicklaus spoke to Golf.com about DeChambeau ahead of The Masters in 2020.
Due to Covid, The Masters was not played until November of that year, and due to the firm and fast conditions, the Golden Bear made a truly jaw-dropping prediction about the LIV golfer.
“Well, let’s start off what he could do,“ Nicklaus began.
“He could drive the 1st green. If it’s firm, he could drive the 1st green. Under the right conditions.“
It’s worth pointing out here that the first hole at Augusta National is 455 yards, and it is uphill!
Now, players can slightly cut the corner on the first hole, and by doing so, shorten the hole by perhaps 40 yards. Still, in order for Bryson DeChambeau to drive the green on the first hole at Augusta National, he would need a wind bordering on a gale at his back.
While DeChambeau is the longest hitter in the game, he will almost certainly never drive the green on the opening hole at The Masters.
Nicklaus’ prediction about the two-time US Open winner has to go down as one of his poorer ones throughout the years.
