Andy sees surgeon in bid to hit the (double) top

One of Edinburgh’s top darts players is preparing to consult a neurosurgeon this month to learn whether a “delicate” jaw operation might help propel him into the limelight.

Andy Davidson, 30, admits his career is being hampered by a rubbing pain on his jaw line which might require Teflon to be inserted between a nerve and artery.

The 2024 Welsh Open and Malta Masters champion said:”When I gave the pro circuit a go a year or two back I wasn’t in pain and travelled to places like Sweden, Switzerland, Lithuania, Finland and Malta and usually finished thereabouts – quarters, semis and a final. That sort of thing.

“Medication is possible for a condition which appeared to start when I had a wisdom tooth removed about 10 years ago and I am in no doubt that sorting it out would help my darts.

“Trouble is there are risks attached to surgery as it would be quite a delicate operation.

“If I do get back to targeting a place in qualifying school it would be 2028 for a place in the PDC organisation which runs the Ally Pally (Alexandra Palace) tournament with a first prize of £1 million.”

Meantime, Andy is focusing much closer to home with a £400 tournament coming up in Prestonpans in December while he is about to sign up for a weekly team tournament at Edinburgh’s BMC Club.

“Team darts always provides that little bit of extra pressure to play well.

“Whatever happens I’ve got the bug for darts again helped by doing reasonably well in the ADC National Finals in Ayslesbury where out of an entry of around 650 I reached the last 16 for a prize of £500. I was, though, just four games away from a £10k pay off which is more than twice what I earned in my biggest pay cheque so far – £4000 for winning a Modus Super Series title” says the former postman now working as a delivery driver for Morrison’s supermarkets.
