Fighting centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder gave the Proteas a substantial lead as Australia prepare to bat on the final day at Newlands.

South Africa were bowled out for 387 late on day four of the deciding Test, setting Australia a target of 288 to win the match and the series.

The hosts resumed on 140-4 and slipped to 181-5 when Matthew Breetzke was caught off Pat Cummins for 43. Rickelton and Mulder then combined for a crucial 154-run partnership to turn the tide.

Rickelton struck 12 fours in his 101 off 219 balls before being run out by Josh Inglis, leaving South Africa on 335-6. Mulder continued the fight, reaching his century as the Proteas extended their advantage

The all-rounder eventually fell for 115 off 221 deliveries, having struck 10 fours and four sixes. Mitchell Starc finished with 3-65, while Cummins claimed two wickets.

Australia will begin their chase on Saturday with the series level at 1-1, knowing victory would secure a series triumph, while the Proteas need 10 wickets to claim the decider.
