With the November 10 trade deadline fast approaching, things are heating up in the NFL. Rumors surrounding New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson have once again stirred a debate, with fans and analysts speculating that he could soon find a new home.
Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson has since turned heads by urging the San Francisco 49ers to pursue the star receiver.
Despite being a high-end receiver, Wilson has seen his production dip significantly over the last few games. He is currently playing on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that he signed in July 2025. Russell believes the 49ers should make a move for Wilson to add more depth to their receiving corps, something Niners fans feel the team desperately needs.
Over the last seven games, the Jets wideout has struggled to get enough targets, recording 37 receptions for 444 yards and just three touchdowns.
Wilson was visibly frustrated on the sidelines during the Jets’ Week 7 loss to Miami, when he was seen in an animated exchange near Geno Smith and members of the coaching staff. However, both Wilson and Smith subsequently clarified that the frustration was directed at the offense’s struggles rather than at each other.
Wilson finished with just two catches for 26 yards, with his first target not coming until the third quarter.
According to Russell, it’s time for Garrett to look beyond the Jets, adding that the team should consider trading him before the deadline.
He initially pitched the idea of Wilson joining the Kansas City Chiefs, where Patrick Mahomes has been struggling to find reliable receiving targets. Garrett could help address that issue. However, if the Chiefs aren’t an option, Russell believes the 49ers would be an ideal landing spot.
“I got one more location, though. Garrett (Wilson), San Francisco 49ers, boy. San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have a chance. The 49ers have a chance. And if I’m Garrett Wilson, I’m checking out the San Francisco 49ers,” he said on CBS Sports’ “Set, Hut!” show earlier this week.
“Kyle Shanahan, I’m making the call. You know, I got my guy Mike Evans a little dinged. You know, he can make plays down in the red zone, this and that. But to find a player that can do every single route for you, that’s Garrett Wilson,” he added.
Niners fans who caught wind of the idea quickly flooded the comment section, praising Russell for his pitch.
“John Lynch, please make this happen, big dawg! You the GOAT if so! Give purdy a true Number 1 so you don’t have to over-utilize Big Mike!,” a fan wrote on X.
“DON’T DO THIS TO ME, MR UNLIMITED,” another Niners fan wrote in reaction to the clip.
Meanwhile, Awful Announcing editor Sam Neumann appeared puzzled by the suggestion, writing, “What are we doing here?”
“Russ knows ball,” another Niners fan commented. Echoing the same sentiment, another user wrote, “Don’t get me excited, Russell.”
Wilson is currently ranked No. 15 in PFN’s NFL Wide Receiver Impact Metric with an 81.0 grade. Although he has publicly dismissed rumors of a potential trade or a desire to leave the Jets, the situation could still change.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Jets may be willing to explore their options if a serious buyer comes forward with a lucrative offer.
The Jets will next face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM ET kickoff on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at MetLife Stadium.
