Alex Eala's costly double fault swings second-set tiebreak as Diana Shnaider takes Tokyo quarterfinal thriller

Just eight days after their clash in the Ningbo Open Round of 16, Alex Eala and Diana Shnaider renewed their rivalry in another tightly contested showdown that went the Russian's way once again.

The Filipina tennis ace saw her Toray Pan Pacific Open campaign come to an end after a grueling 6-2, 6-7(5), three-set battle against world No. 13 Shnaider in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon Philippine time in Tokyo, Japan.

To start the match, Shnaider looked poised to seize the early initiative, holding serve in the opening game before putting Eala under pressure with three break-point opportunities in the second. However, the Filipina held her nerve, stringing together five consecutive points behind a sharper serve to fend off the early threat.

Eala quickly turned defense into offense, using her backhand to dictate the rallies in the third game and secure the first break of the match for a 2-1 lead.

The world No. 19 backed up the break with a solid service hold before tightening her grip on the return game. Eala continued to read Shnaider's serve well, breaking the Russian for a second time in the fifth game before holding comfortably in the sixth to stretch her advantage to 5-1 and put herself firmly in control of the opening set.

Although managed to snap Eala's five-game winning streak, the brief interruption did little to derail the Filipina's command of the opening set. Eala held serve in the eighth game to close out the opener, 6-2.

The difference was particularly evident on the return, where Eala outplayed Shnaider, 11-5, on first-serve return points won. Her ability to neutralize the third seed's first delivery and turn defensive positions into attacking opportunities gave her the upper hand in the rallies.

As the second set loomed, it became more tight with both players holding up serve in the first three games, which enabled Shnaider take the driver seat early at 2-1.

Eala was briefly tested on serve in the fourth game, coughing up three double faults that allowed Shnaider to manufacture two break-point opportunities. However, the Filipina kept her composure under pressure, saving the game with a crucial hold to level the second set at 2-2.

Neither player managed to find a breakthrough over the next three games as both held serve, but Shnaider threatened to shift the momentum once more in the eighth game. The Russian earned another two break points, only for Eala to stand firm behind her serve and fend off the challenge to keep the set locked at 4-4.

The ninth game saw Eala push Shnaider into another extended service battle, earning four break points across six deuces. The Russian managed to save all four, however, holding serve for a 5-4 lead and denying the Filipina a chance to serve for the match.

Both players protected their serve through the 12th game, sending the set into a tiebreak with neither able to find a late break. Eala and Shnaider traded points early and remained deadlocked at 5-5 before the Russian capitalized on a costly double fault from the Filipina, then claimed the next point with an ace to take the tiebreak and force a deciding third set.

The deciding set began with both players holding serve before Shnaider finally found a breakthrough in the third game, converting her first break of the match to move ahead, 2-1. The Russian backed up the break with another service hold, extending her lead to 3-1 and putting Eala under pressure.

Eala managed to hold in the fifth game but subsequently called for a medical timeout to receive treatment on her ankle, adding another concern to the Filipina's fight to stay in the match.

Both players continued to protect their serve throughout the deciding set, making Shnaider's lone break the difference despite Eala's late push in the 10th game. The Filipina's comeback bid ultimately fell short as the Russian held on to close out the match in two hours and 52 minutes.

Eala will look to bounce back in her final tournament of the season at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Tennis Open, which begins on November 2.
