Aston Martin have revealed that Lance Stroll is still recovering from a virus he picked up at the last grand prix in Mexico City.
The Canadian driver is one of a number of drivers on the F1 grid to have become unwell on the Mexico leg of the current triple-header, with Kimi Antonelli and Valtteri Bottas both missing media day last week to recover.
Stroll will miss media day at Interlagos on Thursday as he continues his recovery, although there is no indication that he will miss any track time, with the team 'confident' that he will be back on Friday.
Sergio Perez also became unwell at his home race last weekend, missing a fan event and his own media commitments on Friday as a result.
"Lance will miss media day today as he continues to recover from a viral infection contracted in Mexico," the team revealed on Thursday.
"He is recovering well, and we are confident he will return to the paddock on Friday."
Stroll, illness aside, will be hoping for a more fruitful weekend at Interlagos than he had last time out in Mexico City, where he could only set the 20th fastest time in qualifying before retiring early from Sunday's race.
Both he and team-mate Fernando Alonso retired after just five laps at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez with engine issues, having both already been called into the pits at the end of Lap 3 to (unsuccessfully) address their cooling issues.
“Mexico always provides a very big challenge for the power units and things like that,” Alonso said after the race. “So yeah, even with that, seems that it was not enough, so we had to retire the car. We need to understand.
“Quali and the race was very frustrating, because free practice was fine. We did a lot of laps in FP1, FP2, and FP3 as well, and when we got to the moment of truth, quali and race, we didn’t manage to do enough laps.
“But this is part of the process of learning, and hopefully we can learn – hard lessons – but we can learn things from today.”
