Michael Carrick is on the brink of being sacked by Manchester United following Sunday's chastening defeat at the hands of Bournemouth. The result marked their eighth successive match without victory in all competitions and has piled even more pressure on Carrick, who was already under fire heading into the fixture. As a result, it seems it could only be a matter of time before the 45-year-old is relieved of his duties.
A number of big-name candidates have already been linked with the potential vacancy at United, who could be about to appoint their eighth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson.
Eddie Howe is reportedly favoured by United's director of football Jason Wilcox and is said to be keen on taking over at Old Trafford.
He was initially planning to stay away from management for a while after leaving Newcastle in the summer, but would seemingly be ready to return if United come calling.
Howe is still out of work following his Magpies exit, meaning the Red Devils could secure his signature without paying any compensation.
Julian Nagelsmann is among the other standout candidates for the United job, with head of recruitment Christopher Vivell reportedly eager to appoint the former Germany boss.
He enjoyed plenty of success at Bayern Munich but was far less convincing in charge of his country, who were knocked out of this summer's World Cup in the round of 32.
Antonio Conte has also been mentioned as a potential successor to Carrick, having left Napoli at the end of the previous campaign.
Who do you think should replace Carrick at United? Have your say in our poll below...
He is a serial winner and appears to be keen on the role, with his representatives having already reached out to express his interest in managing the Red Devils.
Unai Emery, another proven winner, has emerged among the contenders to manage United, who would have to pay millions of pounds in compensation to poach him from Aston Villa.
Fabian Hurzeler was linked with the job last week, but it's been reported that he doesn't want to leave Brighton until the end of the season at the earliest.
Several other names, including the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Mauricio Pochettino and Kieran McKenna, are among the outsiders to manage United if Carrick is relieved of his duties.
