Will Wright scored another hat-trick as Liverpool’s Under-19s beat Fenerbahce in a chaotic game in the UEFA Youth League.
Ahead of Andoni Iraola’s senior team taking on the Istanbul club in the Champions League, Rob Page’s team set the tone with a thrilling 5-3 victory in Turkiye, leaving the young Reds in a good position to reach the knockout stages of the competition after recording two wins and two draws.
Liverpool was handed a blow before kick-off, with defender Mor Talla Ndiaye unable to play due to visa issues, but Wright was on hand to make sure the visitors got off to a flying start.
The former Salford City star scored twice inside the opening 15 minutes, with his first after just two two minutes as he headed home Joe Upton’s free-kick.
He was then handed the opportunity to double Liverpool’s lead from the spot after a number of players were dragged down during a corner, with Wright making no mistake after a brief spat between himself and Josh Sonni-Lambie over who would take the penalty.
Emin Sayar quickly pulled a goal back for the hosts, but Liverpool soon restored its two-goal cushion, with Sonni-Lambie getting his goal following a superb through ball from Finn Inglethorpe.
Wright then turned provider as he teed up Inglethorpe to seemingly put the Reds in complete control, but Sayar struck again as the visitors ended a rollercoaster first-half with a 4-2 lead.
Oliver O’Connor went close to adding a fifth shortly after the break, with his free-kick being tipped over by Ruzgar Akgul as a heavy downpour set in, limiting the opportunities during the second half.
Fenerbahce though moved to within a goal of the Reds when Baran Yolacan eventually managed to turn home following a series of blocks from the visitors’ defenders. Any hopes of a comeback though were soon extinguished.

Wright completed his hat-trick after finishing from Luca Eden’s pass, marking the second time he has scored three goals in a game in this season’s Youth League, having also done so against LASK last month.
While Liverpool closed out its victory, there was still more time for some drama, with Fenerbahce’s Ali Demirbilek sent off in stoppage time after kicking out at O’Connor.
The U19s are next in action in the Youth League on November 25 when they make the trip to Club Brugge.
