New Zealand have suffered a major setback ahead of their five-match ODI series against India, with Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra ruled out of the entire contest. Chapman needs another two weeks to recover from a left hamstring injury, while Ravindra has yet to regain full fitness after dislocating his right shoulder.
The hosts will begin the series at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4. New Zealand, led by Mitchell Santner, lost the first three matches of the recently concluded T20I series before bouncing back to win the final two. They will now look to continue their winning momentum in the ODI series.
Mark Chapman sustained a left hamstring injury while playing in the European T20 Premier League in September. He recently underwent an MRI scan, which revealed that he would need another two weeks of rehabilitation to regain full fitness.
Rachin Ravindra dislocated his right shoulder during a promotional shoot in September. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that the all-rounder has not recovered sufficiently to field at full capacity. The management does not want to risk aggravating the injury with the Test series scheduled for later this month.
Both players were unavailable for the T20Is, and their absence from the ODIs leaves the team without two important batting options. The selectors have therefore made several changes to the squad to cover their absence.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment at losing both players for the series and acknowledged their importance to the team. He also provided an update on their recovery and explained why the team was unwilling to take risks with Ravindra's fitness.
"Everyone knows what an asset Mark and Rachin are to this side so it's a shame they have to miss this series," said Walter.
"I caught up with Mark last week and although he's disappointed he's working hard to get back on the field. With Rachin, his shoulder hasn't quite recovered to a position where he could field comfortably in white-ball cricket, so with the Test series later this month we don't want to take any undue risks."
Tim Seifert, who was initially selected for only the final two ODIs, will now be available for the entire series after scoring 93 runs in the final T20I against India. Henry Nicholls has earned a place in the squad for the first three matches. The batter recently scored 119 while opening for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy on Saturday. He will turn 35 this month and has played 92 ODIs, including the team's tour of the West Indies in July.
Dean Foxcroft will join the squad for the final two matches after completing his ongoing red-ball duties with New Zealand A against India A. Matthew Fisher, who was initially selected for the last two ODIs, has also been added to the squad for the entire series as an additional bowling option.
Meanwhile, Matt Henry joined the squad on Monday after missing the final three T20Is against India with a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps. The fast bowler was named for the first three ODIs, but the team management will assess his fitness and match readiness before confirming his availability.
