‘I Do Not Believe in This Head Coach’ — Cowboys Analyst Loses Faith in Brian Schottenheimer Amid Dallas’ Struggles

Brian Schottenheimer’s Dallas Cowboys have lost two straight games and are now 2-4. While Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense have drawn criticism for the recent slide, others have pointed the finger at the head coach

Jeff Cavanaugh Explains His Doubts About Brian Schottenheimer

Cowboys analyst Jeff Cavanaugh, who has covered the team and the NFL Draft for 15 years, has picked a side on the head coach: “I’m gonna officially plant myself in the place of I do not believe in this head coach. I’m officially in that spot.”

The latest loss came on Sunday night, 23-13 to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Despite the slide, Dallas sits third in the NFC East heading into a Monday night trip to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 26.

Cavanaugh, however, followed it with a caveat. “I want him to do great. I want them to go on a run. I want him to win the Super Bowl, obviously… (but) I don’t believe in him as the head coach.”

“I think he fits the mold really well of exactly what does not work here,” Cavanaugh said, and his reasoning went back through the franchise’s history at the head coach position. “They’ve had nine head coaches, and two of them were guys who were really in control of the team… had a history of being successful head coaches and got results, and Jerry’s on record, ‘Those are the two times, I wasn’t having fun,’ and so Jerry hires guys where he gets to have fun, like, ‘It gets to be my show.'”

From there, Cavanaugh turned to Schottenheimer himself. “It’s kind of a weird, bold accusation, but I think he’s overwhelmed.”

How the Dallas Cowboys Reached 2-4

Dallas climbed to 2-2 with a 34-30 win at Houston on Oct. 4. Four days later, the Cowboys lost 24-16 at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game where they turned the ball over three times and gave up 241 rushing yards.

The Cowboys made personnel changes and added to the defensive staff before the Green Bay game, which followed a mini-bye week. Still, Dallas trailed 17-0 at halftime Sunday.

Prescott, who ranks 12th on PFN’s QB Impact Metric, went 34 of 54 for 258 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while the run game produced only 48 yards on 15 carries.

The team’s website noted that the Cowboys ran just one run play after Javonte Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run with 9:19 left in the third quarter.

With 11 games still to play, Schottenheimer said the Cowboys need to get back to work and find solutions. If the losses continue, however, questions about his job security are likely to grow.
